AMG Factory tour

I am going to Stuttgart next week (perfect way to max out T-Rex on the way) and working on a program to visit the Porsche Museum and MB's Museum too
I've contacted the AMG factory to see if something can be worked out too
Will keep you posted. If it works, I'll be taking plenty of photos as I'm taking my camera with me.

Strangle the nearest man who worked there when they decided to gimp the C43 with the 4.3 instead of using the mighty 5.4

Are you going there alone or with some other cars?
I visited MB Museum 2 or 3 times and Affalterbach once. It is around 200km for me.

I'm going with a group from the MBClub UK forum. I managed to tag along with them this morning. Visit is scheduled next week July 3rd. Its going to be a 450km trip up from the south.
Popey are you in the south of Germany? If so, perhaps I could pop round to see your 43 "Black Edition"...

I just received a confirmation this morning from Affalterbach saying that they will offer me a private and exclusive tour of the Factory on the morning of July 3rd. WOW, I never was expecting that

No I am located in the middle of Germany (Close to Frankfurt). Maybe I would like to join you in Affalterbach.

That could probably be arranged if you confirm.

Subscribed...we've scheduled a AMG factory trip second week in August. Can you please post any info you find on both the MB/Porsche museums in Stuttgart when you get it?

What else do you guys have lined up? Flying in to Frankfurt and will definitely take a side trip and go with public access to Nurbugring

I had a great trip up in Affalterbach and Stuttgart. My wife's son was with me and enjoyed the opportunity to act as my chauffeur in the c43. It was impossible to max out on the way up because we had very bad weather conditions with heavy rain for most of the trip up. When it cleared up and the road dried, we had approached the Stuttgart region and traffic rendered high speed driving unsafe. On the way back, the weather was sunny, dry and hot perfect for some fast driving but traffic again was heavy so I only managed a 240kmh on the clock, before jumping on the brakes because of slower vehicles ahead. Nice to see the scenery flash by at that speed
Here's a first photo before I unload and check what's on the memory card tomorrow and give you some more insight of the different visits.

Here are a couple of photos. The flags were out in front of the Customer Services entrance for the visitors of the day. Nice! We had a good two hour visit with Alex as our guide.

Photos of the workshop, etc. are prohibited (understandable) and access to the R&D section a total no-no. There are 1'200 persons working at Affalterbach of which a large majority are in R&D.

We had access to the engine assembly in which the technicians where assembling some nice V12's. Apparently only 2-3 technicians are totally qualified and authorized to build the V12's for Pagani hyper-car. We met and talked to two of the three who happened to be in the assembly area during our visit. Saw a line up of all the AMG engines: straight six (c36) and V8's and V12's. No M113 4.3 unfortunately but the 5.5 was visible.

We had a good look around in the Customer Special Build workshop in which AMG's are tailor made for customer needs. Needless to say there are some exotic ideas and personalization being done. Again unfortunately no cameras where allowed inside.

We managed to peep inside the workshop catering for the facelift and new models but weren't allowed to look further than the doors.

Alex our guide is a great guy and knows his AMG stuff inside out. He contacted the one and only person who would know something about the C43 McLaren version as he has worked for over twenty years in archives. I'm waiting for further info... If nothing positive comes back, then a contact with the McLaren factory in Working will be in the books.

this trip must have been fun?!
when you showed up with your c43, did AMG people give you any positive comments about your car since it's 15 years old?
anyone asking you if you have any plans to make it a C55?

that AMG center must be a profitable tourist trap

I didn't park in front of the Customer Services entrance as I had already parked further away. Parking is very difficult in the area and no specific visitors parking is available. At the end of the visit, Alex our guide asked me to bring the C43 in front of the entrance and flags for a photo shoot. He liked the vehicle and the growl it makes. During the engine assembly workshop visit I talked of the use of the M113 55 engine in place of the 43, he was surprised and didn't seem aware of this conversion. I guess the people working at Affalterbach are more tuned to the current models than the older ones.

I certainly don't consider that AMG is a tourist trap. Firstly, you have to ask and apply for a visit. Secondly, you need to give proof of AMG ownership. Finally, a visit is arranged. The visit is free so no revenues for AMG, but it's all part of the PR budget.

Contrary to what people think and say, AMG's are NOT assembled in Affalterbach. They are assembled on the regular MB assembly lines using specific AMG parts. Only the customer specials are modified at AMG.
