first of all you need a hoist to lift your car skyhigh.

then you need a lifting device with holding arms which you have to put under your tranny as a safety precausion when you unbolt tranny from your car, you don't want your tranny to drop on the floor like dropping an infant baby on the head if you catch my drift?

then start unbolting tranny from back of the engine, unscrewing wireloom, earth straps and unbolt from driveshaft.

it would be sound to drain the gearbox if you take it to a shop.

complete job is kinda complicated if you don't have all the tools and a hoist?
maybe you can ask a mechanic buddy if he can help you out?

The 97 has the 722.629 5 speed which you probably already know. I'm just curious why it's bad. These transmissions are electrically controlled and rely on sensors and controllers/wires to work right. Hate to see you pull the whole transmission if it was something like a rpm speed sensor, ATF in the controller, faulty shift plate... Ect.. Did you have it diagnosed/EGS codes pulled?

Edit* never mind I see you had multiple posts about what was going on.

As complicated as an automatic transmission is I'm not going to touch that one. But being you said it was slipping from a dig, then clicking at a high rpm, then changed gears in limp mode (not even sure that's normally possible as it should hold one gear) slid the wheels down to 40 mph... I'd say your on the right track by dropping the transmission and replacing. I would still open it up for failure analysis as well as take a close look at the wire harness/TCU. Also read this from top to bottom.

Yeah, agreed, no need to pull-out complete gearbox,

usually 722.6 have some issues with "conductor plate/valve body/valve body shift spring/TCU/oil sneaks to TCU through pilot spacer",,

check all these first, if everything OK, then try to open the oil pan and see if there are any copper/metals there,(around the magnet)..!
