1998 C43 Possible Euro Car?

Hey everyone. A newbie here. glad to be a art of your community. My first post and questions are about this c43 I just got. its a 1998 c43 amg. has KM instrument cluster (280km). all climate control, and temp is in Celsius. clock is 24 hour time. heres the vin if someone could run it and see the details on it. WBD202331F662522. It also does not have a obd2 port, that ive found anyway. it has a Georgia title so im guessing its been registered before. anyway, any info would be appreciated. thanks

welcome to the best forum in da world.

this car must be a canadian car imported to US.

www.detali.ru
is a VIN check site for MB cars
you can see what kind of options your car have from factory.

make sure transmission is healthy and it has records of maintanence.
these cars has some expensive parts like rotors and transmission if it breaks, other than that it shares parts with cheaper non AMG cars.

make sure harmonic balancer is replaced on recall.
also check for broken o2 sensors, bad MAF, CPS sensor, rust, bad belt tensioner + idler pulley, pixle problems with lcd display on climate head unit.

other than that w202 is a great car, more solid than many equivalent cars.
service records are important.

can you show a picture of centre console?
if it's wood, it's an NA market car.
if it's a fake carbon console, this is a grey import car, this car will give you some extra rareness if you buy it?

good luck finding a good one

Are you certain it doesn't have OBD2 port? Should be under driver's side knee bolster. Little black plastic flip down door to reveal it. Super obvious once you see it.

The rest of this can be explained by it being a Canada car and all the Celsius stuff is a setting you can change if you know how, same with instrument cluster.

However, not having OBD is a huge clue.

Pop the hood and pull the AMG motor cover. Is there a black pump thing on the front, in the center above the belt area? Or a metal bracket that looks like it held a round black electric pump?

Edit: your VIN is not long enough, by the way.

Also, US VINS for MB start with WDBHA

It does have the fake carbon interior trim. It does not have a smog pump. I still can't locate the obd2 port.

it's most likely a euro car.
it might also have some extra options fitted which US cars is missing?

have you seen the centre console?
this car might be fitted with: parktronic, folding mirrors, power rear blind along with standard options which are adjustable mirrors and pop the trunk switch.

show some pics of the car

Won't be near my car for a few more hours, but it's under driver's side, above your legs, past the knee bolster

This C43 is Euro/Japan version,

OBD connector should be under the hood, passenger side corner, just twist the round connector, you will see 38 pin under it,,

only U.S version comes under the steering with 16 pin..

must be a japanese grey import.
must be very rare to import a car from europe to US.

did you see any japanese stickers in engine room?
if you own it, you are very fortunate to have parktonic on this c43, no c43's in US had this option.

car seems in need of some TLC, it's going to cost you to restore her to your standards.
trunklock is pushed in a bit, when this fail it costs a few hundred bucks to replace, best thing to do is to use the blade key otherwise it will corrode inside.

No words of any kind under the hood. Only place that it has the vin is stamped under the passenger seat. No place on windshield for it nor a sticker I'm the driver door post. Also has vacuum control headlight adjuster inside the vehicle.

I'm jealous. A very, very rare find in the US. Headlight adjusting, pseudo-carbon trim, parktronic sensors, etc. Did it also come with sunblind in the rear window? Option also not available in US cars...

Great find! I hope you buy it and join us while you restore it. It's not that costly to restore. Many of the parts are standard 98-2000 C class parts. Except engine parts, which are the same as 98-2002 E430/S430/CLK430 cars.

Yeah I bought it. We own a bmw service shop here in NC. So hopefully it won't be too bad on me restoring it. No sun blind though.

You're in good hands with this forum. Lots of folks on here can provide a great deal of advice, as well as source some parts for you.

But let me stress this:

DO NOT GET RID OF YOUR FRONT OR REAR BUMPER

They are getting damn near impossible to find. And finding one with parktronic cutouts? They have to come from europe.

I had to source a new bumper for my car (no parktronic) and had to have one shipped here by fellow forum member cm60k from Abu Dhabi.

You can buy new bumper hangers and new bumper reinforcement to correct your hanging bumpers, but do not let those skins or fogs go unless they can't be saved!

This was at IAAI Auctions on east coast.
The C55 badge on the back caught my eye and the euro stuff, but once i ran the VIN thru Mercedes Database, it came out as a regular C43 in the data sheet and i was kinda... crap, i thought it has the 5.5 liter engine...

Two things:

1) It could have had the engine swap. Only the engine's S/N can give it away, right?

2) Didn't ALL C43's start out as finished C43's? The C55 was if you bought a C43 and paid extra to have it swapped as a C55? Would that imply that the VIN would still come up as a C43?

I've been looking around the engine for the engine number but the only one I've found is on the right side above the trans. Would that be the correct number?
