no, the key should work right away without doing anything extra.
my question is: how did you get the key without a MB technician testing it first?
From what i know, based on new regulations at MBUSA earlier this year, MB will not release a new ordered key without they testing it and making sure all is in right order. I ordered over 15 keys this year and every time i had to set up an appointment with service dept. to have the key tested, or pay extra fee ($80) for the tech to come out at my place to test the key.
Every time the key worked right away. The new key even unlocked the car without being put in ignition first.

Just happened to me in my 99 kompressor and I can't even turn to on or anything. Key inserts and won't turn. Unlocks door, locks door, and open close Windows except for the sunroof. I'm going to order a key and take it to WI Simonson or DTLA since i have roadside in my policy. I can't even test with the spare cause I misplaced it and can't remember where I left it. Here's to hoping it is the key.
