Might buy 1997 c36 amg
To the OP.
Not a w202 but a beautiful example of a c32 and the type of car I appreciate. Looks around your price range. I'd snap it up and have it shipped. If you're just dead set on a c36 then maybe wait and find an unmolested example.

There's one on ebay now, 84k miles, mint condition, all original, $5800. Salvage title, but can't imagine why.
It's located about 50 miles from me, I may make the trek after a few more questions from seller and inspecting the vin on autocheck

a "great" body with under 80,000 miles i would say is worth 10k because you wont ever find another one like that most likely.
a good body with over 100,000 miles i would say then your getting down into the 6000-7000 range, and ther will be more of those for sale if you can be patient.
everyone loves to tell new owners on here that they overpaid but they often forget that at any given point in time there is only about 5-8 DECENT cars for sale in the entire USA, maybe less for a C36, so its not like you can not always just wait for a 'better car' to come along.
i paid $11,000 for a C43 with 59,000 miles in 2013 and in VERY GOOD shape overall with no mechanical issues, one owner and all service history. some would claim i should have only paid $8000-$9000 or they "claim" that their buddy bought one 2 years ago for less with the same miles, or they saw one on craigslist, etc etc etc... but i can tell you a low mileage C43 with a body and interior as good as the one i bought has not been on the market since i have bought mine that i am aware of, and i have been watching ever since.

I have two that were high-mileage basket cases that I got for 4k and 2k respectively, and even with the issues (most of which I've fixed) I feel I got REALLY good deals.
for the C36 pictured above, I'd pay no more than $4k due to the way it's going to cost you thousands to get it looking right again.
for the one I mentioned on eBay, the salvage title wouldn't scare me as long as I inspected it myself to make sure it checks out. Maybe even buy a PPI.
The one you mentioned talked down to 6k sounds like a good deal! Go check it out.
Beware customized/modified cars, though. You'll never, EVER grow to love someone else's idea. You're attracted to cars like this because of the way God (read: AMG and MB) made them.
