99 C43 Headliner Replacement

Hey guys and gals,


I made a valiant effort to repair my downed headliner but unfortunately failed. I am looking to replace it and was wondering if its the same part for all w202s? I am looking to contact junkyards to for the part as opposed to buying new. I do have a moon roof and the color of the headliner is light gray. Any and all questions and advise is welcome. Thank you in advance

you have power glass sunroof, all headliners are the same.
buying new from stealership?
i don't know if headliner is available anymore?

junkyards will be your best friend finding parts

I would just get material and do it yourself, that's what we did on mine. never thought the light grey roof matched a black interior so mine is all black suede been on for well over a year and hasn't begun to sag whatsoever

Don't get used from a junkyard. It will fall down immediately.

If you can take yours out, take it out and take it to an upholstery shop. They should recover it in black felt for like 100 bucks.

Take it to an Upholstery place OR just staple it. I did that to mine and hid the staples well, it isnt perfect but it isnt bad.

for about 400 bucks my local interior guy can do it new in the fake Alcantera stuff.

Just FYI, factory part is about $850, I just had it quoted this past weekend. There are different color codes, so no, they are not all the same. Have to get one out of a car with the same color code, but not necessarily another C43.

Yeah. I think they quoted me $1000 for the headliner last time I was at the dealership, that was without installation. It's almost worth the grand because of the sun-visors.

I've been to a few shops around NJ, none in NYC yet though. I've been quoted 300 to 500, and the 300 included the headliner and the sunroof panel but not the sun-visors which they advised me they couldn't do at all. The 500 price was just the headliner and not the sunroof or the sun-visors.

I spoke to a guy in the Bronx who assured me he could do the headliner, the sunroof and the sun-visors. Apparently you need a special press or something to do the visors.

So yeah, you can go with alcantra. The very nice material you find in Porsche, Ferrari, Rolls Royce, or "imitation" it's not really imitation, it's just another brand. But... The hardware on the sun-visors can't really be changed. I've seen dashboards painted but I think the small moving parts on the sun-visors would chip so color is definitely a problem. I was thinking of doing my headliner in a nice black or really dark charcoal.

The other thing you should look out for is if your headliner is going, very probable that the material on your pillars is coming off too. First shop I went to pointed it out to me and offered to fix it for free (guys for $300), none of the other shops mentioned it.

I almost want to spend the $1000 so I don't have to worry about the color, but the alcantra style material is just so much nicer....

Part number for the headliner assembly is A2026901950 if you want to go digging around on the internet. I thought my color code for it was 904, but apparently there is more to it than just that number. Dealer ended up using my VIN. I found it a year ago or so for $550 and it has been going up in price about $100 every time I ask. I am attempting to maintain originality as much as possible, which is why I am going for the OEM piece. I will recover the sunroof cover with factory style material myself, but I didn't want to mess with the black strips on either side of the factory headliner itself.

I had mine re-done in suede. From what the upholstery shop told me, once the glue starts to fail, it keeps going. Especially here in the heat and humidity of the Midwest summers.

The suede looks killer and I also had the C pillars wrapped in updated fabric to emulate the newer cars. I need to do the A & B pillars now to complete the look.

400 to redo the headliner is ridiculous.

Most places ive seen charge less than 200 and they do a damn good job. My sister had hers done on her 98 c230

Totally agree! Found the OEM headliner online for around $500, but just not as nice as that suede. Grey Charcoal for me if possible, going to look around and see if hardware can be painted or replaced. Maybe can order directly from MB under a different color code???? Possibly will post in w202 forum asking if I have time in the next few days.

The suede inspiration came from my buddy's E39 M5 several years ago. I thought the suede headliner looked great, so when mine started falling, it was a no-brainer to get it re-done in that material.

The fabric upgrade to the pillars isn't something you really notice until you see it side-by-side with the old felt-looking material. It really does update the look of the car.

How much to do the headliner & all of the pillars?

Of course, your money will vary, but it ran just shy of $500, which included all material.

To complete the A & B pillars will run me about $45/ea, so another $90.

sheesh, that's expensive! I bought the fabric from local craft store and glue from home depot for a total of $50 and did it myself. 2 years now and it still holds up perfectly

My local upholstery shop said that they might need to remove the windshield in order to replace the headliner. IS THIS TRUE?? I am re doing the entire headliner in light silver (mercury) oem color suede

No, not at all. I pulled mine out in my driveway. The fact that they said that would almost make me want to go else where.

Here is a step by step for a W210 and it is nearly identical in our cars:

Mines just started to drop also, seems to always happen when I store a 202 with car cover(breathable too), last time I thought it was because I left the car damp after washing, this time it was all bone dry and I left the windows open...it still failed.

Does anyone know what actually fails is it the foam or glue?

Looking to go with factory replacement(1380NZD! xD), have recovered this on last 202 before never looks as clean or smooth as the factory.

In any of the DIY's that I have seen, including the one posted above, it is clear that the headliner needs to be "folded" or "bent" to be removed from the car since the headliner is bigger than any of the door openings. Perhaps the shop is simply trying to avoid bending the headliner, which to me sounds like they are only trying to preserve it. What are your thoughts guys?
