I have a spare airbox and throttle body plastic elbow that I want to modify.


Basically I want to shave the internals and make it smooth. Whats the best way of going about this?? What tools do I need to use??

probably a dremel, sandpaper and a lot of patience. LOL

i watched some videos on youtube about abs plastic and fiberglass resin and it really doesn't seem easy at all. its something that someone who is good at body work or carpentry might be able to pull off, but im guessing for the time consumed it would be better to have someone just do it for you.

there are some good threads around here about cold air intakes which might be easier too.

Well I got my own so Id rather modify it then spend $400 even tho its very good value for the price and his box looks amazing.


I need a new MAF so Im trying to do these upgrades before I get that. Its a bad timing to spend another $300-400 for something I dont require for my car to run. Its just an extra thing Id like to do on my own

keep us posted. no interest in the cold air intake? seems a bit easier to do.

so yeah i looked around and i think you can make a SRI or even a CAI pretty cheap. the y coupling is like $17 from oreilly's auto parts. maybe can be had cheaper somewhere else as well. sections of aluminum tubing can probably be had for cheap as well (6ft $35). couplings arent that much ($2-$3). the filters would probably be the most expensive thing and they also sell these water repellent bags to go over the filers for around $25 a pop if you decided to go CAI. but it seems like SRI could be a good way to go as well. didnt look up the cost of the wrap but cant imagine it would be that expensive. might also be a good idea to wrap the headers even if they are oem. the main problem i see i think is the cost of the tools... you would need a pipe cutter and a pipe bender. if you know an electrician, you could borrow theirs. i worked as an electrician some years back and used to cut and bend electrical conduit.

looking at Dr. B's picture... i guess you could just cut the airbox in half and then use some abs plastic or fiberglass technique to build in the wall. its probably more than i would attempt, you might be more confident than i though. keep us posted! a write up would be cool


2nd idea for the SRI/CAI is to use that aluminum tubing they use on the back of stoves/ovens, some of it is pretty flexible and would save the need for bending, you could probably cut it with a pair of tin snips, but idk how well it would work with couplings on the ends. might better lightly attaching any couplings and using duct tape.

I can ship you an all done air box and the elbow for $485.00 plus shipping. The elbow also gets gasket ported for all the air to rush in to the throttle body.

I will do the same price for anyone else that may be imterested.
I will tell all you guys this, you DO NOT want to attempt this on your own. I do body and paint and it takes me a while to do it right.

+1 I have the elbow and Airbox in my 55 swapped c43 and it makes a huge difference. Geo is a great guy to work with and I recommend you try his products

Hey thanks for that, really appreciate it. I'm working on some elbows and would like to send one to someone with a stock c43 air box. Like to see if they can feel the difference with the FFE compared to the stock one. Only catch is that the person I send it to has to report back with a mini review good or bad. And this is optional, if you like the elbow than send me yours back so I can mod it.

Keep im mind too that the elbow I mod is oem. It's just gutted for better air flow than sanded smooth and gets a new paint job.

I've got a stock w202 c43, all original except wheels from a similar vintage e55. It sure is fun to drive, but I've begun to get that itch, which is how I found this post. After changing the air filters when obdii showed me the poor girl was gasping for air and noticing a marked improvement, and having had a close look at the intake and airbox I thought that seemed a ripe place to eke out some improvement. Then I saw this thread and that you (Geo?) were looking for someone with a stock system. I'm happy to write a review, but if not that, also happy to come to other arrangements. Sorry to hijack the thread but it seemed the apropos place to respond.

Scott, the elbow will make a little difference with stock air box. Your engine will breathe better with my modded air box and elbow. I have both and the air box has a built in bell mouth. The BM is awesome and produces torque and great throttle response in all rpms. If you live in the USA I'm selling both for $550.00 shipped. I'm no longer offering this work for cheap, lot of work and have to make it worth my while.
