Trunk Spring

Hi Crew.. weird thing happened .. I closed my trunk and herd this noise.. Opened it up and had to raze it by hand. The spring was loose.. I put it back in the one of the holes, there are many holes like 3 where it could go.. Its not as strong as it was. I think a bracket failed... Anybody had this happen? It a low miles Calif c43 just hit 90,000... I could move the spring in some for more pressure but do not want to brake the thin metal bracket. Wonder if I am the only one with this failed part.
Thanks

You are missing a piece. The spring is not hooked directly to the trunk. Theres another metal wire like hook thats between the spring and trunk. It proba ly fell out

I think having the S hook makes it open with the proper tension.

Not having it will either cause it to open too fast or too slow from what I remember

I've never seen the S-Hook on these cars. The pictured triangular bracket looks like a broken off piece of the forward spring attachment bracket. I have had to repair these. See the attached drawing form the EPC. Typically what causes the trunk to lose tension is the forward spring attachment bracket welded to the hinge breaks and bends back under spring tension of falls off completely. A repair kit is available to fix the forward bracket, P/N 202 758 02 14 (Item number 38 in the drawing - the number in a circle implies a repair part). The spring tension is set at the three holes where the rear of the spring attaches.

I looked at both sides... and searched all over the trunk.. I have no s spring in mine.. Mine looks just like #38 in your photo... Thanks guys.. I can see on the good side the bracket is weak from moving also.. The paint is cracked on the same place the other side broke.. There are other holes on that bracket.. I just used a good hole.. It pops open now again.. But it used to pop all the way open.. Now it ops up and I lift the rest of the way. Does your cars open all the way with the button or just pops open a few inches. I cant remember.. Thanks guys.. Looks like there all going to fail sooner or latter with out some more metal to make them stronger and not flex.

I have always used the repair kit. After installing the repair kit (a bolt on solution) the truck opens fully.

It is available from M-B dealers. The typical online resources do not carry these type of parts. I almost always use my local dealer. I have a long term relationship with them and it is rarely worth it for me to go elsewhere. You can try calling Pelican Parts - they can get parts from dealer sources. I have occasionally used the dealer in the following link in the past.
