C36 ASR

Hi, I need help. After restoring the C36 the problem is that when I started the ASR light is on. I have tried easy solutions but got nothing. Finally ABS also turned on. Where is the problem. In the wiring? The car moves forward in pulses. And the motor does not turn properly. Many thanks.

ASR light usually points to an issue with the throttle actuator on M104’s. If you have a ‘95 or ‘96 model, have you checked the throttle actuator wire harness for exposed wires? How is the condition of your engine wiring harness?

My C36 is from 94.
The wiring is checked and in good condition.
-The ABS module could get wet in the restoration.
-The brake fluid was replaced.
-The pedal switch and wheel sensors revised.
-ASR light on at startup, ABS 3 seconds later.
-Before the restoration the cruise control was constantly deactivated, sometimes it did not work.
-With position D without accelerating the car advances in pulses.

is the throttle actuator original with biodegradable wiring ? Check the date code on the green/white sticker. If yes, it is almost certainly the issue.

Today I unplugged the throttle body and started, the car did not exceed 2.5k rpm. It was limited. I have reconnected it and the car increases the rpm but the error continues. Thank you so much for everything.

Not sure if the following will help, but I'll post it anyway.

My previous C240 wagon with the M112 V6 had the ABS and ASR warning lights on. Then the tempomat wouldn't engage either.
Turned out that the brake light switch on the pedal was faulty. New switch (cheap) installed and no problems after.

Have you cut open the actuator wire sheathing to check individual wires inside? The outermost wire sheathing doesn’t break down, it’s the small wires inside. This link has some good info about it: http://www.restoreyourmercedes.com/m...torrepair.html

Sometimes problems don’t arise until the exposed throttle body wires have been moved around or disturbed and now touching each other. An engine rebuild definitely could cause that.

Defective biodegradable wire sheathing

Agree on double check throttle body actuator wiring. My 1994 C280 m104 had the same issue.

Glad to hear that you found the problem! I suppose you have 3 options to fix the throttle actuator:
  1. Fix it yourself by re-wrapping each wire with electrical tape or something better, as well as cleaning and re-soldering contacts. This is obviously the cheapest option, if you're handy.
  2. Send it out for rebuild. Costs $300 to $500 depending on the shop, however, this is not a guaranteed fix. BBA-Reman messed up my throttle actuator worse than when I sent it in. Took me months of calling them to finally get my money back.
  3. Buy a new one from Mercedes Benz. Obviously the most expensive option. I ended up doing this after the fiasco with BBA-Reman left me unable to fix the actuator myself. These things are not cheap if they are still available.
Another option might be to find a used actuator, but you will have to determine if the unit you're looking at is free of this defect. I think M104 engines built in mid-1996 and newer had good wiring, but I'm not absolutely sure.

Good Luck!

There was once a write-up on rewiring it yourself. Definitely cheapest. The trick is to make sure you re-use the connector, which requires care during the disassembly process.

Found it: M104_ETA_rewiring.pdf (w124performance.com)

4- buy a used one. The actuators are not that difficult to find on eBay. They are the same for all M104 engines. There is a part number for the ASR version and non ASR version. The key is to find the date code where it has been made after say 1998 which will not have the bad wiring. The date code is printed on the green/white sticker on the actuator. Nearly all eBay sellers are unaware of this and often times the date is faded and/or not shown.

Hello everyone, I have already performed the operation. I have mounted the throttle body and the truth is that the car has completely changed. I got the throttle back. The rpm sometimes good, other times I feel low, but it vibrates less. The ASR ABS light is still on. The ABS light came on when I replaced the foot switch. Before only the ASR was on, could it be that now if the problem is there? Any other idea?

I’ve heard that a faulty actuator could damage the throttle control module (aka E-GAS) over time, but haven’t known of this actually happening to anybody with an M104.

I would try replacing the OVP relay. They are easy to replace and inexpensive.

Hello again! I have managed to solve the problems with ASR.
But other new problems appeared.
- When I accelerate in N the engine fan sounds a lot, the fan sounds more than the car itself, I replaced the fan clutch with a new one, what could I have done wrong?
- When I put the lever in D the engine vibrates a lot.
Try to push intermittently. The sound is very strange, I feel like knocks under the chair. Gearbox? Transmission?
Torque converter?
Thanks for everything!

Hi, how did you fix the throttle issue. My vehicle had a throttle issue, it wasn't opening well. I purchased a refurbished one. The part number is 000-141-57-25 but this apparently is without ASR, my C36 has ASR. I'm confused because the mercedes OEM site has 000-141-57-25 part number listed for the 1995 C36, well this part is for vehicle w/o ASR, my C36 has a ASR switch.
