Gas pump troubles?

My car is at the dealer for a couple little issues, including problems fueling. Unless I push the fuel nozzle into the filler very hard it triggers the pump shutoff. I confirmed this at several different gas stations.

My dealer told me they will check it out but that this is likely normal and caused by MB's new fuel filler design. This sounded like nonsense to me, but sure enough my loaner C43 does exactly the same thing.

What is this insanity? MB designed a new fuel filler that doesn't work properly with most pumps and is just telling folks to live with it? The only other car I've owned with a remotely tricky fuel filler was a 35 year-old BMW. I can't fathom why this issue would be acceptable on a brand new Mercedes.

i find that keeping a plastic red gas can in the trunk works great.. I fill the gas can then pour it into the gas tank.. works every time!!it also helps me remember to bring gas home for the yard equipment

Luckily for me I just know how to put gas in my car. Maybe it was the way I was raised or some other stroke of luck in my lifetime but it never seems to be an issue. Who knows, maybe gas pumps in Washington just work a little better or that was my gift from god.

Turn the handle upside down & pump,it may work, it has for me...when the pump shuts
off prematurely.

Good luck

It depends. Some states have different gas pumps. The ones we have in Cali are hit or miss. I know which stations to avoid but I remember how much of pita it was when I first got the car.

Nozzles in in NY stations for example will fit perfectly on our cars.

These don't fit properly:

These the ones that fit perfectly:

I have never noticed an issue in NJ. we have the ones in the top picture above. i am usually not the one pumping due to the laws but the attendants always walk away and never have to come back to restart it.

Only issue I have had is that the pump will initially cut off after a few tenths of a gallon but then work fine after pulling the pump handle again. I've learned to prevent this by waiting for the pump to fully select my grade of fuel and then slowly pulling on the handle before I lock it into place. If I pull the handle quickly, it'll cut off.

Other than that, I've never had a problem. Now that I say that, it'll happen to me when I fill up on the way home today....

Certain pumps that pump very fast give me a problem, so I avoid that station. Otherwise, no issues.

Sometimes it is so hard to tell if you are serious or you are just trolling.

On the other hand, I have the same problem guys. The way around is starting to fuel slowly into the tank. Like don't pull the pump handle all the way in. Slowly increase the flow up to 10L, after putting in 10L like this, you can go full in with all the flow and it should not shut off.

Worked for me till now. Let us know if you guys figure out a better way.

I have the same filling problem in Brooklyn NY but only at BP stations, others don't give me problems. Avoiding BP at this point.

Recently this has become a huge issue for me. Happens almost everytime I go to fuel the car these days. I find the problem only happens when the car has been siting for a long time. Never happens after driving the car hard. Something to do with gas build up inside the tank.

Don't actually shove it all the way in. Only stick it in a little bit, where a few coils of the spring on the nozzle are showing.

Wink My 2017 E 300 cant put gas in tank EITHER!

HI<
Took car to dealer for service B. Two years old. 7000 miles. Had in Hawaii last two years. Barely drove. Different gas pumps there. OLD kind. So nice. Came back to Ca with car. Can NOT fill or even put gas in tank. Takes 20 min. Hand is chopped up, tank not full. Just like other cars on here. Dealer kept it THREE days. Took it to various gas stations. Said nothing wrong with it. Now that I get it back, I SWEAR they put some new black plastic filler partition in the car. It was NOT there before! I now pull in ANY gas station. Stick fuel filler in tank. Pull back so auto fills. Go sit in car on internet or phone. IT fills, stops and VOILA, the car is full. Don't tell me they didn't "do " anything to it. But glad they did..I think I see a brand new black plastic filler in the tank. Call me crazy ( everyone else does) but that's my experience. I was about to get RID of it because its my only car in CA and I was getting frustrated at the pump every single time. Now, no problem. Explanation when dealer claims they did nothing to it, and had NO problems filling it? HOGWASH is my explanation. Why'd they have my car three days, giving me FREE Mercedes to drive while they only were doing oil, rotate tires, etc. then ....THREE days????

My wife had a 2015 C300 that we struggled with for almost a year trying to put gas in, dealer tried everything including new tank and filler neck assembly, all the way to Germany, even dealer couldn't fill tank, end result dealer took car back and she got a new one. As for my new 2019 C43 glad to say I've not had a problem.

With the 2019 C63S, I have the similar issue filling up gas in California gas stations. I need to manually hold the handle otherwise it keep tripping and stops the fuel flow. Tried different gas stations and different locations, hasn't really helped.

You’ve got to ease it in slowly. Don’t just jam it in all the way. Slide it back and forth a few times, gently. Tease it a bit to really get it warmed up. You’ll know when it’s ready to take the full length.

I had the same issue until I realized that I was pushing it in too far. Every time it stopped I was tempted to push it in to make sure it was inserted all the way. But actually, just take it out a centimeter or so and it'll work. It did for me, never had an issue since.

Yeah, the trick with Mercs (and BMWs), I've found, is to only put in the tip. Never had an issue with this approach. Jam in it all the way, and she ain't happy.
