I bought my car off the lot and it didn't have the PE. Does anyone know if a dealer will install after or does it have to ordered with it from the factory. Any thoughts on non-oem exhausts?

The Performance Exhaust is not real.
People claim that it exists, however no one on this forum has been able to produce a photo of said exhaust system. This is a fraud perpetrated by Afalterbach to ring up the register for another $1200.
PICS OR IT DIDN'T HAPPEN.

so the exhaust button is an illusion I guess. Or it's just a dummy button that does nothing but light up

Check out the attachments of Peterk81's post at the end of my thread again.

The design of the Performance Exhaust (U78) is different than the Sport Exhaust (U21) in two ways:

1. The mid section has one less resonator and a separate pipe goes to each muffler.

2. There's a valve in each muffler that is controlled by the switch in the center console.

This is darned interesting. Looks like the PE is a true dual system, maybe all the way from the turbos back? And the standard exhaust is definitely a single pipe from the midpipe forward.

this is how the non-PE looks from the engine back till they split again to the tailpipes.

I suppose that makes a lot more sense than having two different catalytic converter designs. Wonder if the PE has any real performance benefit given the configuration.

Anyone know why the Performance Exhaust is louder in Sport + than comfort (when exhaust button is pressed)? It pops and backfire's a lot more in Sport + whereas if you leave it in comfort but press the exhaust button on it doesn't crack and pop as much on upshifts or downshifts?

I noticed that as well. It really sucks to have to always be in sport + mode in order to enjoy the loudest sound with crack and pops. Glad I Opt for the Performance Exhaust, sorry to those who now wants but didn't get it.

The other day a Maserati was roaring next to me, but the performance exhaust did a good job catching the driver's attention.

There are two things at work here....there are flaps (vanes as MB calls them) that open and close depending on the what setting you have chosen...and then the rev match along with the popping and cracking is computer controlled by spark and timing.

Thanks tblountman, makes sense.
When in Sports + under heavy throttle it sounds like a gunshot changing gears and is almost embarrassingly loud.
Can you set it up to crack and pop in individual mode but without the hard suspension of Sports + etc.?

You think it should, right? But, MB still rates both with the same HP/TQ numbers.

I agree the upshift gunshots are slightly embarrassing and i could live without. The crackling is nice though. There are some sweet spots where it just sings...

My car pops on overrun in Comfort when transmission is set to Manual (most noticeably when in 2nd or 3rd gear) - but not as loud as in Sport+

The transmission setting controls the exhaust as well as the actual button.

So when you're in individual - just make sure you're in sport+ for transmission (the rest can be comfort).

That way you can soften the ride/steering but keep the loud exhaust (if that is your intent).

I think I have managed to shut a lot of mustangs and Camaros up with my PE. Those bang shots really help, hahaha. I for one cannot have enough of those. Time to time it would throw in 2 or 3 bangs all together for a single gear change, those are the ones which really stops everyone in the street.
