Airmatic vs potholes

I'm planning to get the new C43 and it looks like airmatic will be standard? How much more does it soften up the ride in comfort mode vs springs on 19in rims? Is the airmatic system easier on the rim/wheel when hitting potholes?

What you get standard is AMG ride control.. it still uses steel spring that are pretty stiff, you can adjust the dampers slightly but that doesn’t make much of a difference .. I would suggest getting the 18” rims and get rid of the stock runflat tires... that’s about as soft as it’s gonna get

You're right. With all the 'matics and other buzzwords on mbusa pages I've been tripping. How does the AMG ride control compare with a C300 sport 4matic's suspension in terms of comfort or stiffness? Thanks

It’s stiffer especially on 19” wheels even in comfort mode on the dampers.. there are no aftermarket softer springs that I’m aware of to soften the ride

That's worrying with how terrible the roads here are. My C300 actually felt stiffer than the C63 I had before it.

I'm in NYC and know how crap the roads are here and in Jersey. Personally I don't find the ride to be that bad in the c43 and since you've had a 63 you probably wouldn't think so either. It sure isn't the absolute most comfortable option but we didn't get it to be. As others say, the run flats definitely make it a rougher ride. My c43 was ordered for the wifey with the all season RFT, for the winter I put on blizzaks non-run flat and its slightly softer. Just keep dodging the craters and keep away from the sewer grate dips along the highway like you would with any car and you'll be fine.

As for air-matic, c43 isnt equipped, and as for it's ability to eat potholes and ride comfy - my S500 ate potholes and drove like a cloud, my e63 much harsher even in comfort mode. So its all up to tuning and tire size with air-matic.

2018 AMG C43 T
I previously had a C250 with standard "comfort" steel springs and was actually suprised how comfortable the C43 was. Yes, of course it's stiffer, but I don't think it's that stiff that some people say. We have some pretty bad roads here in Norway and I can live with the C43 and 19"s with no problem. On my C250 I had 18"s with runflat (comes standard with AMG-package in Norway). The 19"s on the C43 with non-run flats actually feels more comfortable, they are softer and with less road noise (Dunlop SportMaxx summer tyres).
The C63 is way stiffer.

Airmatic ain't that great in my opinion, at least not in the C-class. The downside of airsuspension is often that you "feel and hear" the bumps more, driving over small potholes etc. Compared with my C250 with steel springs it wasn't much more comfortable, either.

2018 c43
I just purchased a 2018 C43, have had it for a month, and find the ride to be stiff but very similar to my previous car (428i). The roads here in New Orleans are poor, and I have the 19” wheels with the run flats so I suspect I feeling it as bad as it can get. Not really all that bad.
