2019 and CarPlay

Is CarPlay only possible if your phone is plugged in? Or is it possible to connect with CarPlay through NFC pairing?

Now that I think about it, what is the point of NFC connection if it doesn’t offer any additional functionality over Bluetooth? Really makes no sense.

NFC connection is not for that use as far as I am aware. Near Field Connection (nfc) is mainly used for payments (like Apple Pay and Samsung pay)

NFC can be used for a lot more than pay. Its like a digital handshake between 2 items. You can use a NFC sticker and it will tell you device to do something based on its coding. For the NFC in the merc- its mainly benefiting the Android devices since, from my knowledge, apple does not have this type of handshake yet outside of apple pay.

The NFC in Europe also allows for digital key potential, where you just use your mobile to unlock your door when you get near. US is dabbling with this, but not sure where the states are for approvals.

If you do use an Android device, the idea is, touching the NFC and your device shakes hands with the car, then connects to each other. The NFC does the same thing as the end user if they were to search for the vehicle's bluetooth connection, connect, enter in or match the code, then save the connection.

Additionally, wireless carplay is available in the Mbux system in the E class and new A. The NFC creates a more secure connection through wifi and bluetooth combined. Definitely not as secure as a hard cable though...

It does as of this Fall. It's a gamechanger as Waze is so much easier to use than any NAV system I've had installed on any of my cars. I also like that when using Waze with Carplay, it essentially turns it into a dual screen system with turn list on the phone and map on the car screen. The only drawback is that if you move off of the app on the phone to read a text or email, it takes the map off of the screen. However, this was not enough of a factor to make me buy the navigation in the car.

Digital Gauges

Does any component of CarPlay show in the digital instrument cluster? I have yet to see or hear about this in any vehicle, but figured I’d ask. Maybe an active app shrunk down on one side? Waze showing up? Etc.

Haven't tried CarPlay, but Android Auto does show basic arrows and distance in the digital dash. Not controllable through the steering wheel though..

Google Maps are fantastic in the 2019 with CarPlay.... Search is the best, plus you get the satellite view. Very cool.

The only thing better with Waze is that it tips you off to where the police are... So you kind of have to use Waze.

Bump- been a bit since there has been a post here and now that more people have their car, including me, I have a few questions. The digital instrument cluster has a Maps/GPS selection, but it just says loading/please wait. I do not have command or the SD card nav- Is there any more development on Carplay or Android Auto showing in the digital instrument?

As a side note, when I use the voice command "Navigation" it asks me to insert the SD card. I am wondering if mine was pre-wired although I did not order it. That would be a nice mistake!

Yeah when I wave my iPhone close to the NFC point in my 2019, it activates Apple Pay on my phone.

I'm actually wondering if I could use it to make car payments. LOL.
