shouid i be pissed? Indy shop used aftermarket engine oil filter
shouid i be pissed? Indy shop used aftermarket engine oil filter when they advertised as "we specialize in Mercedes Benz, BMW, Audi, Volkswagen" on their website.
i was going to get my next oil change at this place but they have no room for me on that date so i took it to Mercedes dealer.
this is what Mercedes dealer told me.
"Who ever did the last oil change on the car used a aftermarket oil filter so when the tech pulled it off it spilt some oil on the front of the engine cause it was so tight. We will steam clean it off but i just wanted to let you know if you see a little bit of oil or smell it, it will burn off but who ever did the last service did not use MB parts".

Did you ask the independent shop whether they use OEM or non-OEM, aftermarket filters/parts before utilizing them?
Did they give you an invoice at the time with listed parts used (type of oil, quarts used, etc.)?
Not trying to sound harsh, but I always checked that stuff out ahead of time. I learned the hard way years ago after using an indy shop for summer/winter tire swaps. Assumed they were always balancing correctly and using correct PSI values. They weren’t, and I ended up with bad cupping on a set of Conti 5Ps.

I asked what kinda of oil they using.
he said motor1, that's what Mercedes recommended.
i just looked at my receipt, it listed as "oil filter kit" 24.50$.
that's Mercedes price, i don't think aftermarket filter costs 24.50$.
"we specialize in Mercedes Benz"
isnt Mercedes recommended OEM parts?
i gave that shop 1 star on Google and Yelp.

Yeah man, not trying to be harsh, but you can't just assume that they're going to use OEM parts. Specializing in working on certain German cars (i.e., having the tools and diagnostic equipment required to diagnose things and take things apart) is one thing, using OEM parts is another.
If they would've told you that they only use OEM parts, or if the receipt specifically listed an OEM MB filter, then yeah, you would have been justified in being pissed.

do you know how much they charged me for oil change? 160$.
if i wanted any oil change or aftermarket parts, i would just go to those lube that charge 49.99$ or 79.99$ for oil change.

But to your original question of whether they did anything deliberately shady to justified being pissed? No.
It could've ended up much worse man. Did they use the right oil at least (MB recommends 5W-40 that means the 229.5 spec)? Depending on your climate, 0W-40 also meets the spec (that's what the W204 C63s initially came with, back in the day).
In the future, if you're going to use an independent shop, get a quote, ask what oil they use, what filter, whether they use a Mityvac, etc.

LOL. Dealer claiming the aftermarket filter made them spill oil. Bunch of BS and OP gets all wound up about it. If they used a high quality fleece filter and the correct oil then you got what you paid for. So quit your *****in'.

+1 nothing to be concerned about.
Biggest problem poor tech spilt some oil and service adviser deflected the blame to: you guessed it last place they installed "Harry cardboard cheap *** filter” really? Yes sir you better believe it.

When you take a Ford to an Indy did you always say "Motorcraft filters only"? I doubt it. You do know that both Mahle and Mann are OEMs for Mercedes Benz right? There's a really high chance that the aftermarket oil filter you're so worried about is one of those brands.
Good luck on building a good working relationship with an Indy shop. You sound like a very reasonable person to work with. It's obvious that you clearly communicate expectations up front and are prompt and reasonable when addressing any issues that crop up

The only concern I would have is the oil filter as MB branded oil filters are manufacture for long distance oil changes and perform for our vehicle schedule. Anything else on the market may not meet the MB oil filter benefits and my cause engine damage. I would always order the filter from MB and bring my car to another place to do the oil change to save cost.

How ridiculous. You can get the OEM Mann branded filter off ebay for half the MB branded, or any number of better filters made by Mann, Mahle, Hengst. Good for the shop for not getting raped by MB.

just cus they made by the same company, it doesn't mean you getting the same quality. why waste money on a S class when you can get a CLA made by the same company Mercedes.

I would never expect an indy shop to use OEM parts unless specifically stated they do. For the most part, a manufacturer is not going to sell wholesale to a shop that competes with its own dealers. So, in order to get the OEM parts, the shop needs to get them from a dealer, who will obviously look to sell it for more than they paid for it. So, if your "indy" shop has to buy a part from your dealer who bought it from Mercedes, that means your parts cost more at the shop than at the dealer....which raises the price of your service. Most people go to an indy shop because it costs less than the dealer.
There are obviously some exceptions to this for OEM-owened brands that sell to parts-stores as well (Such as ACDelco, Motorcraft, etc.) but even then, I wouldn't naturally expect to go to a non-Ford shop and be certain I was getting a Motorcraft filter (nor would I care if a comparable or better quality filter was used). There's no magic to an oil filter because it says "Mercedes" on it.
