BMW Mod: Opened up my C43 mufflers & semi straight pipe (w/pics) Armytrix Sound!

NOW WITH SOUNDCLIPS !: See member toward end of thread below who has performed this Mod.

I came from the old v8 m3 crowd where this was a common thing to do with our mufflers and straight pipe certain sections for a deeper louder sound with a OEM tone.
don't have complete pictures as this was a old-ish project but wanted to let the community know that it can be done.

seems like the muffler has a built in hemholtz resonator built into the flow of the main pipe...empties into a chamber, this explains how they controlled the drone. what I don't get is that it loopty loops around itself in order to exit.
I would assume this would impede flow, but maybe it was done for sound ? anyway the section with holes were cut where the blue lines are and a straight pipe was welded in as per my silly drawing.
chewbaca was put back in and re-welded up (cant even see it was modded).

Sound....sexy deep and exotic. Paired with a resonator delete and sounds like a mini baby Nissan GTR in sport plus from the outside, hightway at 2k rpms in comfort ..NO DRONE! wow!...very bearable and almost sounds stock when cruising.
and its cheap if you can get the right person to do it for you. need the connecting pipe bent a little because there is a downward offset to connect to the exit pipe. pops and cracks sound more bassy and can be heard better.

Nice! Got any sound clips please? This might just be the exhaust mod I have to do. I was considering changing up my midpipe and deleting the resonator too. But maybe I'll do this first and afterwards change up the midpipe if I feel like it. I'm always looking out for a junkyard AMG performance exhaust but none are worthy of buying. I only have seen them highly damaged and yet priced ridiculously high.

This is not the PE but the regular sports exhaust. Sorry no soundclip...I had a gopro but that broke unfortunately. I had a friend took a recording of a flyby but its on his old phone that wont turn back on.

i have extra soundproofing on my car so the in car video wont pick it up as in real life (I tried).

The best way I can describe it is: look at all the straight piped videos on youtube...you'll notice that with all of them there is a "bbzzzzzzz" undertone in the driveby's and and revs sound. sounds unrefined and causes a vibrating resonance that's buzzy and high pitched. This mod smooths that out and gets rid of it so what you hear more of is the pulsing and vroom.

All I can say is that, this is really how it should have came from the factory. and that loop really confuses me inside the muffler though. Best part...dealer cant tell at all :-P

I love the engineering of the built in hemholtz chamber section.

How are you separating the housing around the dampening material and pipes?

I believe the fabricator grinded open the seams of the top and bottom housing casing nice and neat and rewelded them back. this was unnecessary though, but more like..."where the heck is it" type of experiment and exploration. you can easily use a cutting tool to cut just the area where the straight pipe section needs to be modified kind of like this (this is not the muffler though, just a reference pic)>>>

Chiming in here. I think no one is brave enough or has reason to modify a PE. But here is the cut open pics of the C63 PE which should be the same in design.

There is no fiberglass acoustical filling in there..what you see is what you get. Just a straight pipe and a offset straight pipe with slit holes cut into it that resonates the sound into the casing chamber.

Thanks for sharing those pics, I ended up buying c63s mufflers like those just now as opposed to modifying the stock mufflers in case I want to revert back to stock. I'll try these for now without modding the midpipe. I got the mufflers for really cheap so not a big loss if I don't like it. I may or may not buy a c63 midpipe after this.

I didn't read the post correctly, I thought that was a C43 PE muffler, but the C63 PE may be the same inside as the C43 PE?

I am going to assume the c63 PE and C43 PE are similar on the inside with the exception on the C63 the pipe with the slot holes in it exits outside the case and becomes it own exhaust pipe ( for a total of 2)

where (I AM ASSUMING) the C43 PE has the slotted pipe re-join the main large exhaust pipe upon exit.

see below:

Just got back home from the shop, I went forward with this same modification to the muffler. I have got to give many thanks to EbonyCoupe43 for sharing this mod! I'm very happy with it.

The exhaust is deeper, and maybe about *EDIT:10-20% louder, roughly (relative to RPM vs before). A slightly subtle yet very welcome change. No noticeable drone was introduced and freeway driving in comfort is still quiet. I can now hear more exhaust at low RPM driving in sports+ (EDIT: and comfort) and that's exactly what I was hoping for. I can only imagine what it's like paired with a resonator delete. For now I'm sticking with this since I don't want to be waking up my baby when driving her in the C450.

The guy at the shop reused the existing outlet pipe that was cut off (not the pipe with holes). He realized it was a perfect fit when he rotated it around.

I recommend headphones to hear the change, it's subtle and the sound of capturing it on camera isn't quite as noticeable as hearing it in person.

Doesn’t seem to yield the results that warrant the time/money..

For most people you're probably right, since most people want to go much louder anyway. I think this was mostly experimental for me but it turned out to be worth the money and I'm satisfied with the result. It's the perfect amount of increased volume and deepened sound for me.

I will try to get a drive by video, it might be better to hear the difference. I really enjoy the increased volume at low RPM when accelerating at lower speeds, while keeping the same stock tone just deeper. I hear more of the burbles on deceleration, and the loud pops are even louder.

I want to do a full PE, with valves. So I can open it up when it's just me in the car, but quiet it down when I have the baby, my gf, or anyone else. But since I'm pretty happy with this muffler mod I might not do it anytime soon. This car was supposed to be my idea of a family car .

Out of curiosity, why do this mod instead of just cutting the mufflers off and running pipe to the tips?

couple reasons...sound profile and DRONE.

seems like the oem muffler has a built in hemholtz resonator chamber built into the muffler casing. this allows the nasty, drone type buzzing sound and bass around 2k-2500 rpm to expand and cancel it.

it also sounds factory and not over the top as opposed to doing full straight pipes.

i wish i would have done this!

Anyone tried removing the fiberglass? since its the thing reducing the sound.

prob not the same effect. still have the perforation holes where sound escapes and that sound killing curve in the main pipe

I have an update,

I changed my midpipe to a dual, added the c43 PE resonator and an x pipe. Sounds really nice now and still no drone. I originally put c63s mufflers in and it sounded good but the loud drone immediately annoyed me. I drove it like this for 4 hours and then I put the old mufflers right back in.

I'll post a startup video soon

Looks like this now but not with the c63s mufflers, as I removed them

wow, cool.

you have a drone killing setup with the middle resonator and the rear muffler with the Hemholtz sections. Thanks for sharing!
