People might call it that way if a lot of mechanical parts in lambo had "VW" marking on them, just like in Audi. I'm not saying that I agree with the "glorified VW" slogan, I in fact disagree. But I understand why people have been using the phrase to mock Audi.
What I truly believe is that Lexus is a glorified Toyota.

From the language. Compact is "Kompakt" in German.
SLK is actually SL Kompakt (compact SL)
CLK is CL Kompakt (compact CLK)
SL is of course Sport Leicht (Sport Light), and CL is Comfort Leicht.
(Please note that everyone is aware that the current productions aren’t light by any means)
E stands for Einspritzung (fuel injection) which was the main feature when this model was first introduced back then.
S stands for Sonderklasse which means "Special Class" for obvious reasons.
G stands for Gelandewagen (cross country)
CLS is always marketed as a 4-door coupe, so I’m gonna guess that CLS stands for “CL Sonder” or a special version of CL ?? Maybe ??
So looks like MB had no intention to sort them alphabetically based on size.
I'm not sure about ML & GL, so I'm gonna need some help here.
Now I wonder what A4 stands for ? A5 ? A6 ? Anyone wants to explain ? Please do so. I wouldn’t mind learning about the history.

Well, when I was a kid, I thought they name it through the alphabetical order. As an entry level or the cheapest among line-up, A-class takes place. Then move up a bit more expensive is B-class, then C-class and so on. Also, I thought that K behind CLK, SLK stands for Kompressor. As if it indicates that CLK is sportier and has better performance than regular C-class.
And so does BMW starts with low number as their entry-level car, 3-series. Audy? I don't know. Maybe they build more into driver car like BMW, so they give number just like BMW but with A (Audi) in the front

I own and Audi TT and that's the closest thing to an Audi that is a "glorified" VW. But get in and drive one and you'll appreciate the "glory"!!!

Oh my. Just by looking at the 6 pictures above is enough to make the LEDs looking over the top. Imagine, soon the A4, A6 and A8, will have similar headlights, not to mention similar grille.

1 thing good about audi... when they come up with some 'innovative' design like the grille and the LED lights, they will make sure maximum usage of the design on all models...
they are so cost efficient...

And Ferrari and Maserati are glorified Fiats.
If anything you could say VW, Audi, Seat, Skoda, Bentley and Bugatti are glorified Porsches since A) Porsche desighed the first VW and B) Porsche looks like it's about to become the majority owner of VAG.

You are forgetting about the A3 which is a Golf in fancy dress, this also applies to the slightly downmarket Skoda Octavia and numerous different Seat's, all Golfs.

True. But when my TT was made (2002) it was the closest thing to a VW in the Audi lineup. The A3 is probably the closest today.

Agreed. Those LEDs in the lights look ridiculous. I guess they are trying to match BMW's halo lights that have been around for a while.
Not even close.
People on the street will laugh and feel bad for the owners.

Well I wouldn't call it ridiculous. At first it looked hot and very exclusive on the R8. But once they put the same thing on the whole lineups then it starts to lose its exclusivity. And the worst part is, it starts to get old.

audi is no competitor to benz at all... besides.... A5/S5 just looks ugly... it's just a A3 or A4 with 2 doors.... i would be surprised if it's similar price to C63.... the price is not attractive at all.... completely different league from C63... it's stupid to even try to compare them. I would definitely choose C350 or 335i over S5 or RS5 or whatever audi...
after seeing all the coupes from bmw and benz, audi boss just thought they need a quick solution to compete.... ok then they just give 2 doors to an A4 while everything else remains the same... that's it... such a quick simple cheap solution... no innovation at all...

Those pics above are really interesting.
I really want to like the S5, but in those pics the front grille looks absolutely enormous! The headlamps look somewhat small.
It's got great lines, but the face has some problems

my attempt at levity. the discussion was getting a bit edgy to this point. guess it flew completely over your head. o well, maybe next time.

The NEXT S4 will be the same chassis and drivetrain as the S5.

wow.... i can't wait til that happens. that would be crazy. man i really think BMW made a mistake on the 335i. $3500 for procede and an LSD and you're in e92 m3 territory; and it looks like audi's going the same route. this would definitely take away from rs4 sales.

But that ain't gonna happen the next S4 will use the same v8 as the S5. Where did you hear that the S4 would use a V6, the RSTT will use the same motor as the V6 TT but with twin turbos, this motor is a narrow angle unit and isn't related to the v6 in the A4, A6, A8, Q7.

It's been the latest news released and confirmed with inside sources...the B8 S4 will have a 3.0TT FSI V6, they are dropping the V8.

We have confirmed with inside sources that the B8 S4 will debut with a brand new 3.0-liter TFSI bi-turbo producing 330-hp. With this powerplant Audi can nearly match the B7's 340-hp output while providing even better performance figures. Manufacturer published (conservative) 0-60mph drops from 5.4 seconds to very low 5's, while the accompanying combined fuel economy rises from 17 mpg to over 20 mpg.
More importantly, at least from the enthusiast point of view, a return to bi-turbos means that modifying the B8 S4 to enhance its stock performance capabilities will be a more historically straightforward (and less expensive) endeavor. And lest we forget the all important marketing perspective, the 3.0-liter bi-turbo will also best a similar offering in BMW's 335i which weighs in at only 300-hp.
Delivering power to the ground reveals the other technological breakthrough which will debut on the new S4. It is given that it will employ Audi's revered quattro all-wheel drive, however it will not be just the active sport differential system which is centered around distribution of torque on the rear axle.
The B8 S4 will instead mark the debut of Audi's vectoring quattro system which will allow the dynamic allocation of torque to all four wheels. Audi's already improved driving dynamics thanks to its recent rearward bias will improve even further as the S4 gets the most neutral driving characteristics ever found in a performance sedan.
Timing remains a wildcard for the B8 S4. It is slated to go on sale in the States alongside the B8 A4 in fall 2008, meaning it will have to debut early next year. We put our money on a Big Apple debut at the New York Auto Show in April. In the mean time we have put together two brand new renders of the B8 S4 to help enthusiasts pass the time waiting.
