BMW 330i - C63 on order.
C63 and S/CL63 engine differences.
Hi,
Can someone give a definitive answer as to the differences between the engine fitted to the C63 giving 457hp/600nm and the engine fitted to the S/CL63 giving 525hp/630nm?
Would it be fairly straightforward to modify the C63 engine to give the higher HP/torque figures?
Thanks.

There really is no difference in the engines at all. Something like the airbox and ECU has to be done as a reuslt of the smaller packaging that takes place in the C63. IN essence, you should be able to wipe the floor clean with the S/CL/E/CLK in a stragith line or track.

In that case, how difficult will it be to tune the ECU to the same levels as the CLK/E/CLS/63? Would it be done using a piggyback ECU or a ECU reflash? Thanks.

I think I remember that when the E55 supercharged came out, the only difference that made the engine get less power than the SL55 was because the left air intake was constricted. I think I remember people just buying a second right air intake, and swapping it with the stock left one, to get the same power as the SL55. Maybe it could be something as simple as this?

RENNtech has the best tune going for these 6.2 motors. They can get just over 500 hp with an ecu tune and well more with headers and exhaust work.
AMG simply does not allow the Throttle Body to open 100% at WOT and that reduces the power. There are also subsequent adjustments to timing and fuel mapping but thats the big difference between an S63 motor and a C63 motor. The 507 hp E63 motor is an ECU tune away. Best ECU tune you can get these days for an NA motor!
The RENNtech tune does not have some of the issues with cold starts, rough shifting, and poor idling seen with some of the other C63 tunes out there. Its worth the extra cash I think. Some have gone back to stock after a ecu tune for a different tuner and some saw decreases in power. Might save money with a different tune but that might not be money well spent.

So here's a twist to the conversation... since Renn has a pricetag of just shy of $4k for their tune... how much does a CLK63B ECU cost? Just pick one of those up from salvage and plug and play. (I assume that is possible).
I don't know on the c63 what functions are controlled on ECU - is it just motor? If so it should be a plug and play.
Anyone wanna try? Then perhaps a group buy on ECUs!

If THAT were possible, it would be easier to find a tech in here and have him/her reflash existing ECU with OEM programming. I probably think it will not work and is somehow tied to the VIN.

I believe he is referring to the fly-bywire throttle. Just like a analog video game controller, the further you press, the "more" it activates (steering, throttle, flaps on a flight sim, etc...). The software is restricting the movement of the butterflys on the TB. A full depression of the throttle could be limited to a 90% opening instead of 100%.

Isn't it more about "AMG is not allowed to make a $70k car compete with a $120k car, even if the engines are exactly the same?"

I think you're going to like the results and price of mine.

I actually believe this was intentional by AMG so that they can release the follow-up model W212 with a little more power, and that'll probably be AMG's next move...... they'll likely release the new E63 at 550 hp by opening the throttle body more and maybe use bigger air boxes.
