1000 miles Oh BOY!!!!

MAN talk about compression!!! the decompression on down shifts is amazing.
it throws you forward like nothing else I have been in. It feels as though it has a ton of power at WELL before 7000 rpm. (power is supposed to peak at 6800) and the noise!!! HOLY *****!! And it just keeps pulling!!!
This is as aggressive as any 911 I have had. But then I havent had that much torque before.
I put it in EPSN SPortsCenter mode.....er........ I mean ESP Sport mode and Manual and man All kinds stuff noise power!! Woah man. I still took it easy.
I didnt lite up the tires or anything in fact I had my 13 year old with me but sheesh talk about changing the character of the car!! In comfort mode its a little old ladies car. It doenst sound like that or react like it but compared to the other modes its very moderate. In sport mode with ESP on it gets alot meaner, more power, more sound. But then in Manual with ESP in Sport its like a NASCAR Car on a qualifying run!!! Its like the Mean Man at the Corner on steroids and I still havent let the car loose.
And when I got home I smelled gear oil like the first time I had exercised the LSD. I think thats normal.
LOADS OF FUN, and I still havent opened it up yet!!
This beats the wholly hell out of a M3. I mean not even in the same class.
This has to be the performance bargain of the year.

Don't try what I did, but if you must, be very careful.

I was on the freeway going about 65mph and I noticed that I was late for an appointment, so I put the car is Sport mode and floored it (clicked the button on the bottom of the accelerator), boy was I in for a surprise... the rear tires let loose for a second, and the car just accelerated like a rocket. This car is a BEAST!!!! I didn't realize how fast I was going until I looked down, and it was over 160mph! (PP limited to 174mph)

After that, I'm very careful not to speed... the car is so smooth, I can't tell how fast I'm going on an open road... be warned... this car is FAST!

no offense here Ace, but when you start at 65, you would have to be WOT for about 15 seconds to be doing 160. If you for some reason didn't know that 15 seconds at WOT would have you going pretty fast in a 460bhp car, you probably shouldn't have a driver's license. Then again, doing 160 mph in the middle of the day on a public road is irresponsible anyway.

Never fear, the morality police is here. You can always count on at least one in any thread where someone has a good time.

Can someone confirm when switching from C to S or M modes, you need to be stopped or in park? There is a Hydraulic gear which switches the mode (you can here it) and I don't know or should I say the dealer advised me to stop the vehicle when changing modes so you won't damage the Hydraulic gear... Anyone know the sure facts on this?

The car is designed to switch modes on the fly, there is no harm in doing so, it is actually encouraged to do the switch from comfort to sport in the presence of an M3

May I ask where you are getting your information? I'm Not saying you're wrong but if you are guessing at this you can be causing alot of damage to many members on this forum. Is it in the manual? I haven't checked yet. I guess I'll try to confirm with a MB AMG service manager on Monday.

He's not guessing. You can switch Shift modes whenever you want. Stopped or going 140. Doesn't matter.

PS. I would not listen to a service manager no matter what. Most of the time they are clueless. You're much better off listening to people on this forum.

You can change modes at any time. You can feel the change if you are stationary in C then change to S or M. This is because it's changing from 2nd gear back to 1st.

No harm will come to your transmission.

The reason I have concerns, I use to drive big rigs (I'm Not comparing but) which have similar Hydralic gear switching (I've never seen one on a car before maybe you have? donno) which can be damaged if used improperly. The Only reason why I would depend on my dealers recommendation (which I will speak to on Monday) This dealer is One of the largest AMG Dealer/ service centers in the U.S. My car is Not lease (other words rental) I own it so I need Only facts.

DAMN! Sounds like you're having too much fun. I do need to drive in Manual mode more often. Nice writeup!! I bought this car for the torque, power, and perceived reliability and simplicity over the M3... but THE SOUND is what I ended up loving most.

dlbello, I wouldn't worry about switching modes on the fly -- you're just switching computer "programs" for the tranny to execute.. think of it that way, it's not really a mechanical switch.

Hey Thanks... BTW its funny everyone talks about the sound being the reason why they love it... any car with similar HP and Torque will sound similarly. This past week I took the beast for my first 300 mile run to AC (I'm at the half way point now 500 mi) its a trip I've taken with my 69 vette which has almost similar HP and torque (Big Block engine) and it felt and sounded very close at high speeds... So in conclusion, Hp + Torque = Great Sound We're all heard the sound on an M3 right? ok

In the old days it was compared to 427/454 vs 350 cu engine... C63 is a completely different category to a M3 in my 2 cent opinion : > )))))))))

Did you guys smell gear oil the first time you guys went to M?

I am noticing a gear oil smell after each little exercise in Manual did you guys
notice that? I am not worried because I have had this happen in new cars before.

BTW some kid came up in a Acura and was switching lanes of traffic and got up besides me tonite and much to my wifes chagrin when he took off fast (I just happened to be in Manual) and I punched it and put 3 car lengths in no time with my wife screaming YOU ARE NOT A KID!!! Of course I was smiling ear to ear. I never got over the speed limit nor spun the wheels however.

That is a great feeling... its incredible how the Germans put together a great gear ratio along with max torque... With this car you have high end power throughout each gear, which is a fabulous thing. Unlike the older muscle cars, you had either lower end power (large gears) or high end power ratio (smaller gears) I had the smaller 390 gears on my vette, I could take anything on from 70 - 140 MPH and up in a pinch. On the other hand, low end I had to rev it pretty high but then it was almost uncontrollable 360 lbs+ torque, each wheel had its own drive shaft, No LSD needed : > ))) it looked very sick almost like a funny car with its wheels kicking in-would, very scary....
