Who built your engine and does it matter?
I'm just curious...I'm going to be placing an order for a C63 pretty soon (possibly this weekend), and I know that the engine in these cars are hand-assembled, and they are adorned with a plaque stating who put it together.
My question is, really, does it make any difference who that individual might have been? Is it possible to ask for a vehicle that had its engine assembled by a certain mechanic? Should I even care?

You can not order looking for a specific builder.
But I recently got a tour of the AMG facility and I must say they are all very professional and the quality of their work is top notch. If a builder is out of work while working on an engine his engine simply just gets pushed to the side on the builders stand and sits there waiting for the builder to come back. All the engines are checked at multiple locations along the assembly to ensure everything is good. Leak tests are performed at the end of the line along with complete oil fill (Both pan, and pressurized oil through the galleys). After this the engines are then sent to a separate location of the facility in which they are ALL cold run in which they have a motor turn the crankshaft to ensure propper oil pressure is built up along with compression. Random engines are chosen to be run on a dyno.
Needless to say it is quite an amazing facility.

Can't believe it could matter...
Unless they are doing some custom machining or matching components I can't see how it would matter.

2009 C63 AMG Black on Black PP Package CF fully loaded
Can we all post "Good and Bad" build names or engine name plate pics... Maybe we can track the cars from the forum members that have had mutable engine problems.

if those mechanics are building bad engines for AMG, I am sure AMG would throw a fit, and they wouldnt be there long, at AMG they start at age 15! And work on as an apprentice until they know their way around then start working on their own engines.

I too would be curious to see if there are similar traits that owners have found in engines built by the same mechanic. But with so many levels of quality control, I doubt anything anomalous would slip through the cracks.
Anyway, a curious topic to think about.
