C63 in the rain...comparisons...

My C63 with great tread left on my stock tires and only 2700 miles seems a little more squirelly in the rain than some of the other cars with which I have driven. Is this something you guys have noticed or have you had the opposite experience?

I was thinking the same exact thing myself...I started to hydroplane today at only 65-70 mph...it was friggin stupid. My SLK was more surefooted in the rain. Anyone else experience this. I'm pretty pissed...

Is it just the pirellis that come on our cars? My SLK had conti sportcontact3s....I'm curious to see where this goes.

Agreed. I just got out of a SLK 350 into the C63. I never felt that floating on ice feeling in it like I did with the c63 today.

I haven't driven a c63 in the rain, but I sure it is the tires. I have gone from Michelin Pilot Sports to Goodyear GS-D3 to PZeros on my C230K and the Pirelli's absolutely suck in the rain. The Goodyears are by far the best tires for rain -- sustained 90 MPH is easy in moderate rain. The Michelins were good, too. The Pirellis are scary at 50 in a good fog. (And I don't think they are very good dry, either).

I think it really depends on how much standing water is on the roadway. Of course, the Pirelli's that come on the car stock are better in dry weather, but should still provide decent wet weather traction.

Pzero’s are performance summer tire, it’s ok if you get caught in the rain just slow down and know what you have, if you can't avoid you may want consider a different tire.

I have been driving on summer only high performance tires for over a decade and these are the worst tires in the rain that I have ever used. I loved the Continental Contisport 2 tires on my last car. The Bridgestone RE50s on my wife's car are great.

I dont like Pirelli's either, they wear to fast on Benz's and are lousy in wet weather. I have had plenty of high speed driving in dry and wet weather and Dunlops are for me fantastic tires all around.

What you don't like about the Pzero? I love my but I only drive it during the dry weather it has a great grip it handles very nice.

Well like I said Pzero is a summer tire, and it does very well IMO, if you need to drive fast in the rain you need to go a another kind of tire.

To each his own but I think that giving up rain performance is NOT necessary if one wants outstanding dry performance as well.

I was just thinking this today. I always drive in ESP Sport and that becomes scary. ESP Off... well in the rain that is not a good idea at all.

I was driving through a puddle of water the other day where only the left side tires ran through the water. The entire car wanted to veer into the centre divider on that stretch of road. Mind you, I was going along at about 120 km/h (it was a freeway).

That's not something you'd expect when the car is normally rock steady in the dry. I am definitely going to a different tire once I get the chance.

Car Whore
then why the hell did you people buy a SPORTS car with SPORTS/SUMMER tires on it?
this isn't your pile of crap TRANS AM, its an over 500HP sports car that NEEDS traction, and unfortunately you can't have great dry weather traction and wet weather traction with the same pair of tires!

The question is why the Pirellis seem to suck in the rain when OTHER HIGH PERFORMANCE TIRES do not. Your premise is flawed.

Car Whore
ALL high performance tires suck in the rain.

the tread design for SUMMER HIGH PERFORMANCE and WET PERFORMANCE is completely different.
You can't have both words all at once.

If you want "ALL SEASON" tires, then you should've bought a ****ing PRIUS or SUV.

Not a PERFORMANCE ORIENTED 500+HP race car.

Might I reccomend a new pair of tires for you boys? Try the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus. I have the regular Pilot Sport A/S on my Sl63, and they seem to do wonders for the rain, all the while having damn good handling and traction.

First of all...you're a buttery anus. What does the type of car or its power output have to do with wet stability when going at a steady rate of speed on the highway like we were discussing before you rudely interceded. And even if the horsepower of the car was in question, which it isn't when there is a constant velocity and no acceleration, my Trans Am had over 500 rwhp you douche canoe...and it certainly wasn't a piece of crap. Not that you're opinion matters when you were stupid enough to drive a S2000....how was it having no torque under 10,000 rpm you taint towel (alliteration: +1).

Lastly...as many of us have stated on here.....while high performance tires are geared towards dry performance...that doesn't mean you need to give up at least decent, wet weather stability.
