AMG should make manual cars.....
And by the way I despise SMG so I am not trying to be biased....

These transmissions do exactly what I would want them to do. I have plenty of opportunity to shift in other cars. I don't miss it at all. Plus in a street gunfight the auto does as well as any manual transmission and allows you to drive. I suspect that we would not see such wonderful results on the dragstrip with these cars if they were manuals.
If BMW M made an auto box as good as the AMG cars I would probably still be driving that brand. The BMW M driving dynamics are still better than the AMG cars. Although the C63 comes close.
The Best of Mercedes & AMG
AMG is working on an automatically shifted manual gearbox though. Similar to SMG i guess you could say. This would provide the better fuel economy that has been talked about for a year from AMG since manual gearboxes are more efficient it power transfer. I just wouldn't expect the clutch pedal to appear in any up coming AMG's.
The new auto trannys (regardless of name) are much faster and lower maintenance.
But manual will never be replaced by any technology, even though computers shift faster than humans do.

And even when they can it does not beat an automatic especially when the "automatic" is a manual gearbox electronically controlled. AMG is not to that point YET. But they will be in the future.
Dont' get me wrong Manuals are fun and entertaining. But from a "Performance Brand" point of view their automatics are faster. That is what AMG tunes for. Hence the same reason why clutch pedals are dissappearing out of more and more cars as also mentioned before.

Im sorry, performance is not judged by quarter mile times alone.
Any person that would take an automatic (not an automated manual) over a manual transmission for a twisty set of roads is nuts.
Also, in terms of maintenance, I don't see how an automated manual would be cheaper or require less servicing than a manual driven by an experienced driver.
Many of the cars with these whiz bang auto-manuals don't seem to have very good clutch life compared to true manuals. In fact, I don't think that I, or anyone in my family, has had to replace a clutch on any vehicle for wear with under 100k miles on it.
