Can the 6.3 motor run on half the cylinders?
I plan on making a long road trip and I want to take my C63 with me. The Honda Accord VCM allows it to run on half the cylinders in the motor when it is at cruising speeds. I figured this could help with the gas mileage. Has a topic like this ever been discussed? If not, is it possible to do with a tune? allowing selected injectors not to inject fuel inside, and some how not allowing that cylinder to compress any air inside its chamber?

LOL..... I wouldn't want that even if Mercedes offered on an AMG, I maybe even willing to pay extra not to have that option
We're trying to increase performance here.....
Actually, Mercedes has been using a variation of that technology for (at least) over 7 years now in their standard models, but I do not think and do not know if that technology is employed in the AMG line

If your concern is fuel consumption, try putting the car in Manual mode and keeping it in 7th gear for as much of the duration of the highway journey as possible. You'll be amazed at how much cruising range you can get with this car.
I got over 500 kilometres to a single tank of gas on a road trip recently by keep the car in 7th in Manual mode. I was very impressed.

That's more than decent for a monster 6.2 V8, 310 miles.

Personally, if they did employ something like this, I'm sure many of you would like it, but if it weren't automatic. As far as I know, the one in the Honda switches between 3 and 6 cylinders depending on throttle control. But, I you guys were to have a "road trip" mode, where revs were to be kept low, gearing would be in 6/7, and it were to only run on 3 cylinders, I think that would be a pretty cool option.

I'm pretty much in agreement with everyone here that I didn't buy the C63 to worry about gas mileage, BUT if AMG had some sort of program that shut down half the cylinders while in Comfort mode only, and only after a number of miles had passed where the computer determined you were cruising, AND also had the option to completely override this feature, I would have no problem with this. Oh, and as soon as the kickdown on the gas pedal was engaged all 8 cylinders would return to life.

How're you doing Phil? Long time no see.... How's the car running? And how's life treating you? Will you be able to join us at Famoso this year?

I'm loving the C63. The truth is it's more fun to drive than the two E55's I had. Fun to toss around, more fun since I purchased the Powerchip ECU tune and now has plenty of grip with the Toyo 275x35x18 T1R's in the rear.
The factory Pirelli's 255x35x18's totally sucked and MB should give us C63 owners a rebate for these pitiful tires shod when we picked up our new cars.
Anyway, good to see your still around and enjoying the best looking AMG ever made, the E63 and with the performance to go with these looks!

I have seen all the posts on the W212 and the rear end of that thing is really an embarassment to Mercedes and should be changed at the MY 2011 changeover.
I guess you will wait for the W212 AMG correct? I heard it's going to be a new 5.5TT

I hope it competes with the new M5!

As for Famoso, I'm game but I will need some advance notice. I want to run the C63 and see what she's got. I feel that with the tune it's pretty close to my E55 and maybe a little easier to launch with good top end with the Powerchip tune.

Anyway keep in touch and let me know well in advance of the Famoso get together.
Regards
Phil
