Should i follow the mercedes break-in method or not?

Just to be safe you should follow it. The people who say they floor it out of the dealership have no evidence that it is safe to do this. If the manufacturer insists you follow their rules and even putting a sticker right in the wind shield to remind you, they probably think that's whats best for the engine/tranny. But you don't have to drive like a granny. You should test the vehicle up to the stated rpm and speed level. I know somebody's going to come in this thread and say eff the break in period and just floor it, but that's not "driving the car the way it was meant to be drive..." thats just abusing the car.

Yea Just to be safe you should follow the method that mercedes has provided for you. You never know if your going to have problems in the future if you just step on the gas.

Seriously, you need to follow the break-in procedure. Either that or name one major sports car manufacturer that recommends you "drive it like you stole it" straight off the lot. Would you start up your car on a cold day and floor it right out of the driveway? Probably not either... If you take care of the machinery, it should take care of you...

A few years ago, I asked the same question of a high ranking AMG guy.
His response was, "Are you buying or leasing?"
The discussion was that an engine that was brutalized during break in yielded a faster engine.
Longevity then becomes a secondary issue if you're leasing.

No, he was dead serious.
Here's another opinion.
YMMV.
The biggest drawback to a hard break in is if something goes wrong and they read the black box and say, "Oops, you seem to have exceeded the recommended break in parameters. All day and every day. No warranty for you."
Porsche is among the most likely to do this but they're all looking for ways to cut costs. (Unlike the rest of us.)

Doesn't AMG "break in" these motors at the factory? I'll agree that the issue is the piston ring seal. However, the article talks about advances in technology for everything but the piston rings. What, we can't make better piston rings too? He also talks about the first 20 miles being the most important..and to use dino oil vice synthetic for the first 1,500 miles..
If, as I think they do, the motors are broken in at the factory then 20 miles is a moot point....I'm always looking for the latest edge, but it's going to take more than one posted internet article, primarily about motorcycles, to change my mind on what has worked well for an '06 STi and an '02 E55.
If what he is saying is correct, then you would expect F1, NASCAR, and any other racing team to follow his break in procedure as a few extra hp can make all the difference.
