Would you agree to say that in general, you need an offset of 45 or more?

a 45mm offset wheel may not nessaserily fit. It is all to do with the design of the wheel to clear the calipers.
(i have tried a 45 offset rear that was not even close to fitting)

the reason i ask is because the wheels i have are the first wheels made for the c63 and the distance between the back of the face of the wheel and the caliper is 1 3/16 inches . the top of the caliper to the inside of the barrel of the wheel is a little more than 2 inches . they are willing to make me new rear wheels to create a bigger lip for the rear . i have a 1 inch lip all the way around right now . i think they can go 1 1/2 or 1 3/4 in the rear to change the look of the rears .

You only need about 3mm clearance on the caliper
