"Fog" light on my left rear tail light???

Can someone tell me what the purpose of this light is? Dealer tried to tell me it's for the Autobahn (sp?) but I question that. I think it's more likely a safety light to advise people you need help or something of the sort.

Thanks

Its so in THICK fog a driver approaching you from behind has a better chance of seeing before they rear end you. The Bright Red rear foglight cuts the fog better than the standard tail light making you more visible... Early warning

Occasionally get foggy mornings here in the South and I turn on the fronts and rears. Don't want to wind up in a body shop.

The only retarded part is that they couldnt do it for BOTH tailights. The taillights actually look like they have a malfunction when the left one is more lighted up and brighter than the right one

haha while this is true, i *think* its supposed to stand out like that, cuz then wouldnt it seem like you were riding your brakes the entire time? and it stands out, potentially making the driver behind you aware....

juss my guess to as why its like that....it made sense in my head at least

This. On all other cars I've driven there are two rear fogs, one for each side.

The number of "rear fog lights" one car will have I believe is country specific. I know in Germany it should be only on the drivers side of the car while in other countres I know either require or allow both sides to have them.

You are correct in that having only one rear foglight avoids confusion with the brake lights! In Europe the foglights should only be used when visibility is 100 meters or less.

Mercedes has had this incorperated in the left tailight for decades.

Glad you're not turning the rear foglight on just for the sake of it (ie. When there isn't any fog, not that someone as intelligent as you would do that in the first place), because it's really annoying to the driver behind.
