oem tires verses what you bought next

looking at the sumitomos but im dont know if they will offer more mileage and if so how much. can you all give me some numbers as to how many you got out of your OEMs verses how many you got out of your replacements especially if you used sumitomos? big help. i know there are a ton of tire threads but none i could find answering this question. thanks in advance! 3k miles on my rears of interstate driving and they are close to the wear indicators.

Going with Kumho Ecsta ASX all four corners on next tire change, one size up, 245/40 front and 265/35 rear, 18 inch, via The Tire Rack. Stock rears are bald at 5500 miles after this past weekend at the Orange County Race Craft high performance driving school!

Stock Pirellis I got about 5500 miles. I then changed the rears to Kumho Ecsta I think Spt or something like that. Those lasted to about 15,200 miles. Now I'm running Nexens. Btw, I still have a little tread left on the front which are the stock Pirellis.

FYI for anyone looking at Kumhos they are LOUD. ~3-5000 miles in they get annoying. As they begin to really wear at the end of their life they become almost unbearable.

Im about to go with the RE760's. They seem to be rated right with the big boys at $100 less per tire. Not much more than the Sumi's.

Only going with the rears right now. My fronts are barely driven on and the rears are dead. What a joke.

@ Jae Duk - i just looked your tires up and noticed the Kumhos are "all season." if i understood you correctly you said you left the stock P-zeros on the front and used the Kumhos for about 15k miles. when i called tirerack they said under no circumstances should you go with an all season on the back and a summer on the front..... what gives?

how was your experience doing that?

Another recommendation - if you guys dont mind noise, the BFG KDW T/A's at $167 a pop are a STEAL. Tons of grip, phenomenal tire, just a little loud towards end of life. In terms of price for grip (and treadwear) it doesnt get much better.

Looks like the RE760's only drawback is their weight...27lbs a tire vs 24lbs for many others, thats a chunky tire....

@Rory - you must be thinking just like me. scary huh? im considering the RE760s now as well. looks like it has a slightly higher treadwear life rating than the sumis. plus the REs were rated #1. let me know what ya think! where the REs get much more expensive than the sumis are when you buy fronts. the sumi fronts are beyond affordable.

The only thing that bothers me is 2lbs per corner unsprung vs OEM. I know its minute but still every little bit counts.

Im going to keep my fronts for as long as I can...maybe when the next set of rears where out I'll replace all 4.

In my experience with tires, there are 3 aspects - grip, wear, and comfort. You cant have all 3 typically without spending big bucks. Whatever bit of grip you give up, you should gain in wear and/or comfort. Whatever bit of wear you give up, you should gain in grip and/or comfort, so on and so forth.

With cheaper tires like Sumitomo's, Kumho's, Generals, etc...they have gotten the grip down, the wear is above average, but the comfort always seems to suffer when the tires get some mileage on them. Thats something that I am just SO over as a driver...when I was younger it didnt bother me to have tires that sounded like bad wheel bearings. Now? Its frustrating, and I want nothing to do with it. Thats what drew me to the RE760's - now if I could just find someone who ran a 12.2 stock with them to make me feel better I'm all in

im not worried about SUPER grip as i never track and only drive this thing to and from errands and dinners on the weekends. i just want something that looks nice and last without a ton of noise.

How was the cars balance with rear 275's and stock front 235's? Seems like a big diff.

I got Sumitomo HTRZIIIs from Tire Rack for about $160 per tire and I love them. The OEM Pirellis on the rear (specifically the right rear) were shot after 4K miles. I already have over 4K on the Sumitomos and they are nowhere near the treadwear indicators. Looks like they will last another 2K or more (which should be about right since their treadwear rating is 300 vs the Pirellis 220). I cant tell the difference between the OEM tire and the Sumis. Since they are much cheaper and last longer than the OEM tires its an easy choice for me. I will probably continue to use them for as long as I own the car. By the way, I do about 2K miles per month so I spend a lot of time getting new tires on this little beast.

Jae,
15k miles is what im looking for if possible. i assume you went wider because tirerack didnt offer that tire in OEM size. now its getting complicated....

I seriously doubt that any tire that has anything even close to decent traction will last 15K miles on the rear of a C63. If you could find one in the proper size with a treadwear rating that would allow it to last that long I think it would be almost undrivable. Consider your self very lucky if you can find a decent performance tire that lasts 8K to 10K miles on this car. We're talking about the rears only now. I have no idea yet how long the fronts will last but its appears to be easily 2 to 3 times the life of the rears, and that's if you just drive normal road use, no track time, burnouts, etc. If anyone disagrees with these comments I'd be very interested to hear what tires you are running and what your experience with them has been, both fronts and rears.

Actually I wanted to get wider tires. I don't know if it'll last 15K miles. I got about 9,500 miles which is about 2 times more than what I got on the Pirellis.

1. Replaced OEM Pirellis rears only with same at 4200 miles (probably could have gone to 5K)
2. Replaced fronts AND rears at 9K miles with Continental Extreme Contact DWs (stock spec fronts and 265/35/18 rears)

Love the Contis. Handle well. Hook up fine. Rain driving is great. Tire wear looks promising at 12K miles. Will post my eventual miles on the rears. Fronts will likely last 15-20K miles. Rears perhaps 8K. Really don't know about the rears.

At 3K miles I'm optimistic that I'll get to 8K+ on the rears. I thought that these tires would not handle as well as the Pzeros but they are living up to the www.tirerack.com review. A bit better in the wet and a hair away from the Pzeros in the dry.

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tests/...y.jsp?ttid=120

My advice is from someone who does NOT track their car but enjoys driving backroads.

I just went with these as well and echo the comments. Plus the tread pattern is real perrrdy...looks good.
