custom C63 winter mud flaps for 8$ DIY
Hi guys,
happy new-year
If you drive your car in winter and you live where there is a lot of snow, gravel and salt (I'm in Montreal) you have probably noticed how dirty the lower parts of the front doors gets.
The lower portions of the front tires stick out of the lower wheel well.
If you drive where there is a lot of salt or gravel that is put on the road that mean that winter slush coming off the front tires hits directly the lower part of both the front door. This leads to premature paint wear and nicking as you might guess.
I kwow this is my second winter with my C63.
I inquired at the dealer if there was mud gards for the C63 but they said no.
Also, I didn't want to put permanent mud gards on my C63.
Here's what I did. SEE PICTURES
I bought cheapo mud guards from an auto parts store (canadian tire) for 8$ a pair.
There are two plastic pins inside the back lower portion of the front wheel well. take those plastic pins out with a sharp knife (not the surrounding plastic sleeve).
Use those holes to screw in the mud gards in. Use a very short scewdriver,
My mud gards came with small screws that fit the small holes
Hardest part was to drill the holes in the mud gards at the right place so the mud gards are well alligned.
You can take them off in 1 minute when spring comes along and put the plastic pins back.
Please don't tell me how ugly they look. I know.
Anyways most of the time in winter your car looks like crap. I just want to avoid premature paint damage and make it look good again in the spring.

Hey guys, I'm just trying to share a low cost, easy to take off, way to avoid premature paint damage to your car because of winter driving.
Appart from letting your C63 sit in the garage for 4 month out of the year...
I guess if you live down south it's difficult to understand how much damage the salt and abrasives that they put on the road can damage your car.
Like I said, I know they don't look good, but when your car is covered with calcium, brown road grime and slush, does it matter that much.
Come spring I'll take them off in a minute.
Hey just my 2 cents

Good work Paul! That seems like a great solution...the guys in the southern states have no idea what we have to endure for a few months of the year, so dont let their ignorance offend. I know it might not look pretty with the muds on, but it will look better in the spring when you have no damage under the side sills/skirts.

The muds work fine so far.
the first pic is my mud guards. Snow on mud guard not on door and door sills.
the 2nd pic is one I got on another post (hope there's no copywright on it). You can easily see how the snow, gravel and calcium comes off the tire and goes directly on the lower door.
that's what I'm trying to avoid as much as possible
BTW I'm still thinking about the grand prix in Montreal. I'll PM or call you when I buy my tickets.

OP, like you, I too drive the C63 in the winter and live in Boston. So nice job. I am sure it will help keep some dirt kicked up by the wheels away from the body. Back when I had my 911, I had my clear bra guy put some 3M film right behind each wheel arch to accomplish the same.
I am glad this thread didn't deteriorate with everyone bashing the OP for driving his C63 in the winter, though it started to go down that path. It's not about being able to buy nice cars. It's about putting those nice cars to work. Especially among C63s, which aren't exotics by any stretch of imagination.

Fantastic idea OP. Getting pretty tired of my pant legs getting dirty every time I get out of the car in the Winter. Love the write up and great pictures.

It's a good solution, along with the great idea of using protective film. I only worry about losing the pins should they come loose while driving. Yes, this type of cars are no exotics so I don't keep them as garage queen in the winter.
