Finned Differential Cooler
#26
Thank you for all the follow-up. Is there something in the way that prevents one from removing the diff cover while the diff is mounted in the car? It may not be worth having to remove the entire diff from the car to install the cooler. What is the time estimate to do the whole job?
Good luck

Take this into account; when you to the grocery store, do you walk in, see the meat and go, awe man! this is crazy, they got better pricing acorss the street at the small mini-mart! OR, do you just buy the meat?
My point is this; a business, be it parts, painting, accounting, landscaping, construction etc is in business to make a profit. You, the consumer, have every and all rights to shop, compare and find the best deal for yourself, and with that in mind (if you work for someone's company) consider that the masses they market to are doing the same just as you, and if they try to offer services or supplies that match or are lower that every quote or price out there, YOU, the employee would begin to feel it....

Just my two cents, but, you will beat any price we list, and, we can find, online prices that are lower than yours...
Happy Hunting!!

Hey, I feel you. I am happy to pay for good service / advice. Its added value and should be worth something.
But I also like to know what my options are, and I figured others would, too.

Aghhh....to bad you have to drop the diff the remove the cover otherwise it would be a great time to remove the cover when doing the diff fluid change.

Thank you for posting the information TheWorkshopMB. Very much appreciated.
But yeah, considering you have to drop the diff, that makes this seemingly inexpensive upgrade close to $700 + all said and done and a little less attractive.
I too am wondering if the rear diff cover and cooler would work on a Quaife LSD?

I was still a bit confused so I want to get this clear
If i am buying the new cover and the cooler and a quaife LSD, could i possibly purchase all 3 parts and drop it in as a complete unit when I take it over seas? Simply fill fluid and swap out the original differential pumpkin without having to open it?
Or is there an additional piece that I need to purchase to mate up to the cover, so that is the housing+cover+cooler, drop quaife inside...?

BTW, whats with the thermal transfer paste questions?? It just bolts on, there is no electricity down there, don't over think here guys, keep it simple. Remove your diff (drain it first), remove the cover, apply Mercedes sealant, install the cover, reinstall the diff, fill the unit, install the cooler, take pictures and drive FAST to make sure it works!!
1.) To electrically insulate the part from the heat sink (which is required in some cases, not required here) and,
2.) To increase contact between the part and the heat sink. There are cases where it is not possible to make a heat sink to exactly the shape of the part so contact faces become relatively small then a pasted would help.
More often than not, (2) is the main purpose of the paste as air gaps will actually insulate your part.
