Finned Differential Cooler

A question for those of you with the factory LSD. Do you have a finned diff cooler on your diff? I have seen pictures of some C63's and they show a finned diff cooler immediately under the diff. I was wondering if this is a factory part for non-U.S. markets or is an aftermarket part. Check out pictures of Revozport's rear diffuser and you'll see exactly what I mean. I have also seen this on E55's.

Here are the Revozport pictures (about halfway down the page):

Yes I noticed it in the pics last fall as well. I have a Canadian early 09 PP car and dont have the cooler either. I went to the dealer and we found it on the computer. I forget but I think it was around either $100.00 or $190.00, something like that. Really it seems its just a bolt on heat sink.
Of course the parts guy had no clue if it would fit onto my earlier build car. Also, my car has a hanger running right accross joining the exhaust pipes at that point so I was going to ask if anyone else here fitted one on a car that didnt originally have one. However since it was fall and the subzero snowy winter was on its way I figured I would be better off without it until spring.
BTW, I asked the parts guy to write down the part numbers of the heat sink and bolts so I could post them here and do some more research about fitting it to our cars and the dink said he would not give me the part numbers! WTF? He said they dont give out part numbers anymore...I guess I dont buy anything from a Calgary dealer anymore...
Anybody else run into this BS?

I could be wrong but I think all Aussie Spec cars come with a finned cooler.

I have a 2010 without LSD and it has the cooler attached. It has the AMG logo stamped into it, looks like a heat sink and appears to be just a bolt on part.

Does it need some kind of thermal transfer paste like a computer's CPU?

It is very interesting that it is not standard on North America spec cars. So it seems that in Australia and HK it comes standard even on non-LSD cars. I wonder why AMG would exclulde it from our cars.

If I have time this week, I will try to visit my local dealer and get the part numbers as well as find out if a "thermal transfer paste" is required.

Next time my car is on the lift I will unbolt this piece and take a look...that is a "hot tip" though.

I'm sure on the European cars it's standard as well. In the US, the 65 mph speed limit wont overheat the differential, hence the cost cutting. Unless the differential housing is different, which I don't think, it's an easy and cheap fix.

That makes sense except for those that track their cars. I am surprised that those North America members who take their cars to the track have not looked into this. Seems like an inexpensive way to help prevent cooking your diff fluid under hard driving. Seems like MB cuts out certain features for our markets and I suppose that considering that we get the cars relatively inexpensively as compared to many other places in the world, it is a small price to pay.

The mufflers in the photos are different because they are aftermarket. The tips are original and only look a different shape because of the angle of the photograph, they are in fact oval shaped. If you check out the thread link in post #13, you’ll see more photos of what was done to this vehicle.

A few closer pics of the diff. cooler.

Multispeed: It doesn’t show in the photo but my car also has the ‘hanger’ running across joining the exhaust pipes a couple of inches or so behind the heat sink.

SMP: The speed limit in Australia is 100kph (60mph), as rantarC63 has said, I would guess yours has been deleted more to do with price point than anything else.

That's correct A171 351 01 08 is the finned cooler for the diff. From what I've seen the differentials themselves are the same just have to bolt it in.

Did anyone confirm that (1) the stock (?) hanger wouldn't be in the way and (2) we need / don't need thermal transfer paste?

Here it is.

The finned cooler 171 351 01 08 @ $123.75 and two additional bolts, about $25.00

and you will also need the rear diff cover, as the stock unit does not have the bolt holes for the fin to mount pn# 204 351 05 08 @ $162.81, in the photographs, look at where the aluminum changes to a darker look, that part is the diff cover, it has fins also, the stock unit does not.

Now to perform this, you will need to remove the diff.

If you are in our area, we can perform this for you, or, you have the part numbers, do the DIY!

Good luck!

BTW, whats with the thermal transfer paste questions?? It just bolts on, there is no electricity down there, don't over think here guys, keep it simple. Remove your diff (drain it first), remove the cover, apply Mercedes sealant, install the cover, reinstall the diff, fill the unit, install the cooler, take pictures and drive FAST to make sure it works!!

Thank you for all the follow-up. Is there something in the way that prevents one from removing the diff cover while the diff is mounted in the car? It may not be worth having to remove the entire diff from the car to install the cooler. What is the time estimate to do the whole job?

Thanks for the info.

I plan on doing a Quaife LSD in the near future and this sounds like a
nice addition to the LSD.
