Burning Oil

I have a 2010 C63 - going through an abnormal amount of oil. It's almost time for the first service. Since mid september I've had to add 3 quarts.

No visible leakage, anyone else had a similar issue? I've dealt with hi performance cars before that burn oil so it's not that surprising.. just wondering if it's normal for the benzo.

Did you baby it, or break it in hard?

It somewhat common with these cars, so I've heard.

I have about 500 miles on my C63 and I haven't had to
add anything yet.

My Wife has put on 80% of the mileage - and she drives like a grandmother.

I didn't drive it particularly hard.. no redline, no long highways trips at constant RPMs.

This is normal for the first 10000km, I went through the same thing, I just carry an extra quart all the time in the trunk, actually, I had to pull off the hwy 427 in woodbrige area as my oil light came on a few months back and I just added that extra quart of oil and everything back to normal.....if you do a search you will see a few threads of this sort already started and it seems that this motor eats oil for the first little while.

I have put in 2 qts in 3600 miles. It is normal for the engine to use some oil during the first few thousand miles.

I had the oil changed at 3,500 miles and have added another quart or so since then (~2,000 additional miles). The car has a thirst for oil but that's to be expected.

lets not forget the large smoke cloud on start up at times... that has to be worth a quarter quart right there! HA HA

I still have my doubts about breaking in an engine on synthetic oil. It must take forever........hence, the thirsty engine.

+1. For the BMW S62 M5 motor (I've had two of those) it has been the experience of a number of owners - myself included - that (initially high) oil consumption may not stabilize until the 25k miles range. I'd guess that the use of modern, high quality synthetic lubricants creates this situation.

German engines are historically known to have 'rougher' cross-hatching in the cylinder bores, which results in a longer break-in/ring bedding period and therefore more oil consumption (1L/1000km is not unusual).

Have you ever noticed that mags that do the long-term tests (with before & after performance tests) show a noticeable improvement in accel. & sometimes even top speed, with German cars; especially as opposed to the Jap-traps, which often show reduced performance over time?

My dealer asked me about burning oil, i have 16000kms, and i have never had a drop missing. How ever i have changed my oil at the following intervals:
1000kms
6000kms
11000kms
16000kms
never oil missing and has always been crystal clear. Very happy with it. I have also had my gearbox and diff oil changed twice, first time at 6000kms and the second time at 16000kms. At 20000kms i will do the spark plugs.

My experience seems a bit atypical.

I changed my oil at 1,400 miles - I was down over one qt. at that point. 2,000 miles later I have not noticed any oil use at all (per dipstick). There is no smoke at start up. There was (to me) a lot of metal and a little bit of what looked like gasket material in the oil filter when I changed the oil, but the dealer said it was not a problem.

I have had zero problems and I drive it like I stole it.

I have over 12k miles on my 09 C63 checked oil level after hard 500miles since oil change. No oil usage,no smoke on cold start up. At idle engine never sounded smoother.

keep in mind that the engine is close to twice the size of most other car engines. So you can expect more oil consumption from a 6.2 liter engine that a 3.0. allthings considered.

Guess you have noticed that since the oil is clean, it should not need changing?

In college I had a 64 VW bug, changed the oil every 2K miles as well as adjusted the valves. Ah well, I was younger then.......

c63 and SL55
c63 AMg oil consumption

My C63 is also using excessive oi;l . now one litre per thousand kilometers or nerly a quart per 600miles
it blows a big puff of blue smoke when started after standing for 3-4 hours . so much so you cannot see the car behind for a few seconds
It has now done 10,000kilometers 6000miles and i must carry a gallon of oil in the trunk
My SL55 only used half of one litre between service and it has done 21,000kilometers. vertually no oil consupmtion . My friend has a C63 and his has never neede to btopped up with oil. We use Molil 1 synthetic
it would seem some engnes have been ter assembled than others .
the mercedes dealer say its normal consumption but i have never had a car use oi;l and bow smoke like this
i am curious to hear if this is common and if mercedes do in fact have a probm with these engines .

I usually keep an extra quart or two in the trunk.. Saves some time later on.

Just to report back, my car has just passed the 15000km mark and oil consumption has dropped to about 1L per 3000km. It used to consume 1L per 1000km as well.

Sounds about right, i've been adding a quart about every 2,500 miles. I'm about to cross 10,000, hopefully, as has been said, the engine starts making more power as the rings start to seal better and less oil is burned.

I just passed the 1,000 mile mark on the odometer and a message
popped up to check engine oil at your next re-fueling.

I didn't drive the car excessively hard during break-in except for
the time I had it on the dyno with 180 miles on the odometer.
