Tires!! My head is spinning

Hey all... Yes another tire thread. Sorry.. 6k miles and its time for the rears. It was time 2K miles ago actually!! Wait till you see the pics of the old ones!!

Anyway.. doing searches and failed tokens to contact the admin and searching through 20 pages of tire threads I still cant get a solid answer!

275/35/18 Yes or No? and Why if the answer is No.
265/35/18 I know its a yes, but I want to go a little wider on the OEM's if I can.

Thanks!

275/30/19 is what I replaced mine with on the rear.

Maybe go 275/30/18 so its doesn't rub, but im not sure maybe it will be fine with 18s.

Thanks for the reply. That has been the mixed thought on all the threads. Some say the 275's dont rub with the 18's while others say they do.

You have to realize that 275 might rub depending on the tire company since some companies make their tires wider. Usually 275/35/18 will fit...it did for me.

I used Sumitomo HTRZIIIs at 265/35/18 and I really like them. They last about 30% longer than the Pirelli's but cost about half as much. Kinda wanted to go 275 but was worried about fit and figured the 265s were a good compromise. Check out Tire Rack for details.

on TireRack you can check the section width of tires. so, if someone says a Sumitomo 275 doesnt' rub, check the section width and use this as a baseline to compare other tires.

my $0.02

So far after 1,000mi, I've been extremely pleased with my rear set of Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus tires. Yes, they are all-season tires, but "ultra high performance all-season" tires with a 500 tread wear rating and a 45,000 mi tread wear warranty from Michelin. The local tire shop where I bought them said they've never had a problem with Michelin not honoring their tread wear warranty even if you can't rotate the tires (like on a C63's staggered setup). So, I figure if I can get > 12,000mi out of these tires on the rear of my C63, then at least I'll get a decent credit toward another set of tires.

Also and just as important is the traction issue. ;-). Believe it or not, I really haven't noticed much difference in traction with these ultra high perf A/S tires as compared with either my previous Bridgestone Potenza Sport RE760's or the oem Pirelli P-Zero's. In fact, they've been so good, I'm getting ready to replace my oem Pirelli's on the front (now w/ > 14,000mi) with a set of these Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus tires to match the rear.

Now, you may not drive > 25,000mi /year like I do, but even changing your rear tires 2-3 x per year can be frustrating. At the rate I was going, I was being forced to buy a set of new rear tires 4 x per year, and I really was not happy with that.

Btw - I went with the 265/35/18's on the rear; with about 100lbs of my work stuff in my trunk, I didn't want to take the risk of possible rubbing and didn't want the speedo to be off that much.

Great value for money. Good performance and tread life for 1/2 the price of other manufactures. I've ran these before and was very impressed. I usually bounce between these and the Khumo Ecsta SPT's.

Several members including myself have mounted 275/35 tires without any rubbing issues. I don't recall anyone ever posting a problem and I don't think that any performance tire is offered in a 275/30 spec.

How can you tell if you need to switch tires? I have around 7k miles and recently started noticing alot more slippage especially during rain.

Do you people switch the rear tires only or all four?

I have around 7k miles on my stock pirellis and was wondering if its ok to just switch the rears. How long do the fronts last for? Would it be about right to switch the fronts the 2nd time I change the rears?

Also does any have Bridgestone RE050A PP on their c63? (275/35/18).

275/35 is the only way to go. Perfect size for the stock rear IMO. I'm going to be replacing my front and rears with 245/40/18 and 275/35/18 Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1 Star Spec soon.

Are those tires (Dunlop Direzza) good for street use? How different are they from Max performance tires (PS2, RE050A, etc)?

They are considered "extreme performance" in that they are basically a race tire for the street. However, the wear and tear as well as road noise will suffer as a result. I'll be interested to see how many miles I can get out of them as compared to the stock Pirellis.

direzza star specs are awesome for the street especially in the wet. i have almost 4k on mine and they still look new. 245/265 is the size to get. I think im done looking for tires now.

+1 on the Sumitomo's. I replaced my rears @ 3500 miles. Now I'm approaching 8500 and the rears are still in good shape. I drive less aggressively now, but the tires are doing well either way.
