Is the headlight switch supposed to be illuminated?

I find it very very ironic that the ONLY switch in my car that doesn't illuminate when the lights are turned on is the headlight switch. The knob itself illuminates with a green circle, so I can find it easily when the car is dark, but the myriad choices do not illuminate and I have to mentally count which is what. When I turn on the lights all the other switches in the car glow orange, but the headlight choices are still black.

The car is an '09; please tell me my car is broken and yours works differently.
Otherwise I have to really scratch my head at whose bright idea this was.

Edit: Correction, the knob itself illuminates with an orange symbol, a green circle appears underneath the knob in the 6 o'clock position.

Not sure, but without starting the car and putting it in key position 2, only the the centre part of the switch that you turn illuminated in mine. I will be running the car later and will take another look.

The headlight switch in Canadian cars is useless.

The only thing it is good for is turning on the parking lamps during the day. Otherwise, no matter what position you have it in at night, everything turns on (as if it is in auto mode).

Maybe mine's broken.

Same on my E63, I can't tell at night what position it in.
I guess this is how Mercedes Benz cut corner to save money

You guys manually start your headlights? I just leave mine on A (auto) all the time. The car knows when it needs to turn on.

yeah but lol, its illegal to have fog lights on without fog in my state in Australia, so I have gotten into the habit of not using them at all, unless it's foggy.

I thought the whole idea of a "fog" light was to use it when it was "foggy"?
