First thing first, Dad I applaud you for this magnificent adventure you undertook on a beautiful car

Now, reality sets in, do you really expect a difference in handling form a less than 1% weight difference. I hope you have track times before and after as I really find it hard to believe that you will see ANY difference my friend.

Having been road racing for well over 20 years, that weight change isn't going to show up in lap times.

Still looks great

None fast enough!
To disagree completely, we found .5-1 second gain on the M3's with the CF roof (42lbs savings) on tight tracks. Taking 42lbs off the highest point in the car will have far more impact than taking off 4x that weight off of the bottom of the car. You are effectively lowering the center of gravity and that will have a positive impact on ALL aspects of the car (handling, braking, accelerating). Yes, it will not be a huge gain to most people, but it is a real benefit to any car.

There is a reason that many manufacturers are starting to look at this from a factory standpoint. BMW was the first, but is not the only.

Thanks
Brad

Isn't tuning all about maximizing the car little by little in as much aspect as possible, to yield a car that is better overall anyway? I think this is awesome. With that said, I just wonder how this will affect the rigidity of the car itself, since the C63 isn't designed for this sort of a roof?

I would like to see the lap time slips please.

Not trying to be a ***** here, but reality sets in about total weight. YES it will lower the center of gravity, which is a GREAT thing, but buy such a small fraction it will not be noticeable.

And if you think that the braking or accelerating will be improved, try taking out your spare tire, and tool kit, and get a data logger for some 60-0 times or 0-60 times, and you will NOT SEE A DARN THING CHANGE.

Its simple physics here guys, as there is simply too much mass above the centerline of the wheels to make this mod track approved.

Again it looks great and I applaud Dad for doing it

Where do you get lap time slips from a road race track? lol

I know you argue theory, but I argue experience. I have this debate with my engineers all the time. In the end, reality trumps theory. Look at F1, even the best engineers in the business get it wrong all the time! What they think will never work, ends up working.

Thanks

And that reason is also client base and style.

I'll bite on it once ALL vehicles come from the factory with a CF roof line

Off the top of my head I do not know of ANY sanctioned racing league that has shown the virtues of using CF roofs for decreased lap times.

Note: MANY leagues use ALL CF construction for strength and weight reductions so these do not count in the above statement.

Ah, from the timing shack. Simply ask them for a transponder next time you are out. At least most tracks around here, PA, Ohio, NY, offer them and most of the time they are free

LMAO!!

Trust me...never had any bodywork...see look at the CarFax.

Seriously JK here...this is an amazing endeavor and I give DAD major props for doing. I think Zephyr and I are commenting more on people's general over-reliance on CarFax vs common sense.

When, one day, you go to sell this car, it will go to a buyer who will appreciate the mods! Im sure a bunch of people on MBWorld would jump on this car in a heartbeat.

Nice work!

The new top is all riveted and glued in place. Will spend the weekend curing and then they will put the interior back in Monday. Then it goes to the back shop for wet sanding and clear coating the new roof!! Said he hoped to have it completed by Tuesday afternoon or Wednesday for sure. Almost there!!

It's not just the carbon fiber roof that will help him reduce the weight of the car, it is a collection of small weight savings here and there that eventually adds up: CF hood, CF roof, CF trunk (coming soon), lighter wheels, lighter brakes, and maybe in the future CF front and rear bumpers, etc.... The collective savings from those mods should show a noticeable difference in 1/4 mile and lap times I think.
