To answer your question, C63 and the SL550 are very different cars. Actually they shouldn't even be compared..SL550 is a luxury roadster and it's not slow just not as fast as an AMG. A more fair comparison would be as to why an E63 is almost 100k fully loaded and your getting almost the same thing as a C63 except what ummm more space and better transmission? doesn't make sense. Yet that's just the way it is. I believe it's like this C,SLK,CLK/E,CLS, SL, S (flagship), and CL. Not including any of the AMG vehicles there

MB has three distinct "flagship" lines: S (sedan), SL (roadster), CL (coupe). Arguably, they are head and shoulders above the other mid- and low-range model lines, with MSRPs to match. The 65's of each (AMG V12TT) are all ~$200k MSRP.

I agree with you except for the CL. The CL is well above an SL and S class in price (brand new) not to mention much more rare.

Yes - just a branding change though, I think. CLK was becoming "E Coupe" and CL was becoming "S Coupe" - IIRC, they are thinking of changing back because of customer reactions to the new names (or maybe I just made that up... but I swear I read that somewhere).

Yes it is the same car just one is 4 door and one is 2 door. Didn't know abotu the name change though. My mom drives an S and my dad drives a CL. Inside looks exactly the same, headlights too, same technology included, but tail lights are different.

CL is theoretically an S Coupe, but the rear seat leg room is shorter by several inches. Does anyone know why? Anyone? Beuller?

Yes... its a coupe!
Ok seriously, its a coupe! Coupes have to slop down in the back. Image a coupe with a long roof line. You wouldnt buy it and it would make no sence to built it long as its handling gets effected by the extra weight and lenght.

I gota say...this is a funny thread! I cant believe some of the questions. And OP, you gota think. If you were so right about the pricing being so absured on an SL. Why the heck do people buy them? Its good to have a guy with smarts to help point out the value in a C63 vs an SL550. Thanks man

When my mom's S and my dad's CL are parked next to each other, the CL is shorter by like 1-2 inches. But you are right, that doesn't account for the amount of space difference. I suspect that the trunk on the CL is longer, but I can't tell by eyeballing it nor did I take a ruler to go measure.

People buy them as a status symbol.... so they can show everyone they have $$$$. The same reason people buy LV or Versace.... Don't get me wrong I think MB produces some superior cars (I wouldn't own one if I didn't believe that) but I think the price tag on the SL is BLOATED.

LOL. Now you're trying to weasel out of what you said. Asking a question as to why the SL is overpriced is one thing. But you said, "I asked why on earth anyone would spend almost twice the price for a car that has less horse power, less torque, less doors, less seats, just...... LESS." And that's what was pretty stupid.

There are plenty of cars out there that cost twice as much as a C Class and with less HP, torque, doors, and seats.

I dunno, besides the Astons, off the top of my head there are the 360 Modenas, the Challenge Stradale, the Morgan Aero, Maserati GranTurismo, DB9 Volante, Porsche 911 Sport Classic, and just about any C2S once you add on options.

You're still trying to weasel out of your lame post. Next time ask a civil question as to why a SL is so expensive instead of barking like a silly fanboy and making fun of a salesperson. Some people buy expensive cars not just because they want to be boy racers.

The title of my post is "SL550 is more than C63???!!??!" not the "SL550 COSTS more than the C63" I was referring to the fact that the SL550 is not more of a car than the C63. I stand by my OP, the SL550 is not twice the car that the C63 is and so I fail to see where the extra $$$$ gets added to the price tag. If you read my original post I DID ask the saleswoman why the SL550 cost so much to which she replied that it has something to do with it being a hard top convertible and that it was MB's flag ship, neither of which makes sense..... Please point out where I made fun of the saleswoman.

I actually bought one because the roof comes down .........and my wife wanted it. Once you own one, you'll know the difference. I also buy Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Prada and Yves Saint Laurent for the same reason: Great quality and very good looking. But I can't stomach Versace.

Just like good old Oscar used to say: "I have the simplest of taste. I'm always satisfied with the best".

Fair enough, you had a function in mind when you bought your SL. Still I think $110k is a bit much to drop on a car just so you can drop the top

Go test drive an SL550. Go rent one for a week. Trust me, its worth every bit of 110K and just like the C63 you can haggle that price down a good amount. You can get into one im sure for about 95K.

Your talking about a car you know nothing about and wondering why it costs so much. Instead of arguing on a forum why dont you go educate yourself about it and then come back and tell us why it shouldnt cost that much. Your opinion would carry much more weight.
