I believe I am going to use Stone Carbon to make this hood. Carl has been good to work with and I believe there are some quality advantages also. They already have the one vented hood on the market and I spoke to a couple of people with that hood and they said the fit and finish was excellent. Does anyone else have any input that has the Stone Carbon hood or products?

Carl has been very aggressive to make this hood and can make it a little quicker also.

Not sure. They're pretty standard struts, so you'd just have to figure out the OEM pressure, and match them up with lower pressure units.

Well it is also a C class body and the increase in width is made up by the fenders...I know it's a stretch but I thought I'd ask as my underhood temps are WAY high

I'm actually quite surprised that MB/AMG didn't provide better underhood heat extraction options for your BS.

It would seem like this or something comparable is a must for the track.

It does actually have side heat extractors/vents but they don't do much - I've checked...the additional coolers help, but if pushed hard (10/10ths) it will go into limp mode (transmission). Usually after a hard drive I'll open the hood to let it cool faster...and it is so hot under there you can't touch anything without being burned. Even the strut bar gets so hot that you cannot touch it.
This is a cool thread. I really like mods that increase performance simply from better design / R&D instead of mechanical and/or bolt on's. On hot days, I can tell that the car is WAY down on power and know that this hood would make a huge difference.

Just looking at pictures of the two cars the hoods are very different from one another. But if this can be done to one hood it can be done to another. I wouldn't be surprised if you could get several BS owners to start a similiar project.

Agreed - however, not to say I don't like how the looks per se....I just think it would kind of detract from the BS design and make it look a bit ricey. The BS already has a pretty agressive look - the hood might push it over the top. It's a tough decision as I have been trying to keep the car stock looking yet figure out how to reduce underhood temps.
Oddly enough - each part that has failed with this car has been heat related. The cam sensor and the parking brake cable both failed from what the factory called "excessive heat".

With any car, if you push it hard enough, heat issues will present. I know exactly what you mean when you say that the car is slower during hot days. It will pull timing. Especially where I live in CA with 91 octane, heat really has an effect if you drive somewhat hard for any extended length of time.

Sounds like the BS already has some good measures to combat heat. With a custom hood like this one, maybe just a different design, your car would really benefit during those track days.

I think this hood looks real good on the C. But I can understand how it might be a bit much on the CLK BS.

LZH,
I got with the local dealership and they confirmed that the two hoods are not compatable. Sorry about that but thanks for the kind words.

I am sure your local body shop can add the louvers or just add the vents as you would like since it would be a one off. The rear vents were very easy to do.

good choice in using Carl . he had some of the best customer service i have ever seen when i was buying my hood from him . even with the crazy time difference , he was really quick to respond to my emails . i will second the fact that the fit and finish was dead on . another good thing about Carl is that the price is going to be well worth it . if i didn't already have one of Carl's first production hoods , i would have jumped on this deal . it's nice to see one of the original modification monsters (Dads) doing something for everyone else . GLWS !!!

Guys,
Just an advisory to those that have placed an order and those that are thinking about it. The hood is shipping Monday DHL to Carl at Stone Carbon and that takes about 7-10 days for transit. Then they can get started. If you are making a decision about ordering you have about two to three more weeks to ponder it before I have to give Carl a firm count and material. Then the order will be in process. Thank you again to those that have already placed their order!!
If no one else places an order then I'll eat the tooling charge and we'll only make six hoods. Just makes them more individual.

Ya'll have a great weekend!!

You guys are so lucky to have Keith make these hoods for the C63.... I wish we had a hood like that for the E63

Honestly, this hood is definitely a great addition to the C-Class, as it makes the car look more aggressive yet still sporty and stylish.... indeed very unique. If you ever think you may want one, this is the time to get it

Hi Keith,

Sensational looking hood! VERY interested in grabbing an FRP hood. Where are the hoods shipping from? Are you able to give me an idea of shipping to Sydney, Australia? Would prefer slow/cheap shipping.

Cheers,

John

John,
The hood can ship direct from Stone Carbon in Hong Kong. Here is Carl's reply to your question.

Hi Keith,

The sea freight to the Sydney sea port is US$285, 15-20 days on the sea.
This cost does not include the clear custom cost and import cost
and tax and local Sydney sea port cost in the Sydney side.

Thank you for your interest.

Curious to know how strong frp is - will the hood bend under stress/air pressure?
