2017 Mini Cooper S Clubman ALL4 - British Racing Green
If the repair costs = +- 75% of the cost of the vehicle, they will write it off, if not, your sol and they will try to repair it. However, all is not lost. Example, my co workers Civic SI which got rear ended and pushed into a Semi Truck on 495 in DC at around 45mph (he was wearing a seatbelt.. sorry.. just a little jab
)
His entire front end, as well as the A pillars, and rear end were damaged, insurance decided to repair it, co worker was hoping is was totaled.
After almost 3 weeks in the shop (and a crappy rental car.. and crappy compared to a Civic SI.. which is crappy to start.. is truly crappy..) he got the car back. Problem is, the car is never the same, he found atleast 27 problems after the repair, minor things, but the work and labour add up, to the point where he complained to the insurance company and they eventually did total it, even after paying for the repairs. Things like the hood and lights were not seated correctly, the dash had rattles and was not reseated correctly, the driver door was not seated correctly and did not open or close right (he put the car next to a new one at a dealer and looked for the differences). These all add up quickly.
The downside, you have to find a crappy body shop that does crappy work (he did not do it on purpose, it just ended up that way).
If you complain to your insurance enough, and send the car back to the body shop to repair the minor things that they never fixed correctly, you can get them to total it, but you will have to fight them tooth and nail.
The magic number for him was 75%, but that may vary with insurance companies.
