Very nerdy stuff,
but very cool.
This is the future. I'm not sure I understand everything in the article, but hopefully in time the process of tuning will only become more safe and more accessable to more people.

I would imagine they won't be too stressed out. I couldn't find pricing for these hardware/software suites/programs, I'm not sure what they are technically considered, but I doubt they're cheap, considering AMG used them to develop the SLS.

I've used MATLAB before, but after looking through this, I'm not sure what anything is. Unless there's an HP and TQ box that I can just put in a higher number, I don't see me doing this myself anytime soon.

MOst cars these days can be 'tuned' via OBD port and a 'tuning suite'. With GM cars, EFILive or HPTuners or LS1Edit are used. There are even some software programs floating around, and successfully used, for the Mitsubishi and Subaru platforms...and they are free.
This software, I'm going to take a wild guess, is not cheap and not easy to buy. And if one doesn't have some real training on how to use it with a wideband O2 sensor and a knocksensor, one will quickly have a very expensive paperweight in their engine bay.
Be good,
TomK
