I remembered back in the day, when tirerack sold snow chains. But these weren't chains, but instead hard plastic material similar to what plastic zip ties and made from. They didn't destroy your tires or your body work. I know that BMW sold them, as an accessory option. But I can't seem to find them anymore. That might be an option for you.
I agree, just rent a SUV and you dont have to worry about your car, salt, snow, sliding, crashing, burning, etc... you'll just be stressed. Ive been there.
With Chains, unless there is 100% packed or fresh snow 100% of the way then you'll be faced with having to remove and replace throughout your journey.
If your stubborn about it, try these:

I havent used them so cant vouch for them but they look interesting.

Long thread read that was. I ended up with SCC traction cables they work and are cheap like $130 I guess a truck would be just as cheap to rent, but I don't like driving trucks and was more comfortable in my car. I still didn't need to use them after all. There were a few times I had traction issues, but nothing serious.

my 4x4 struggled last weekend with snow tires in Tahoe. even with studded tires our cars would have just been asking for trouble. it was a terrible whiteout.. you would still be stuck in Tahoe, like 100's of my other friends
