2012 W204 LED Taillight Retrofit DIY

These are the part numbers:
A 204 820 41 64
A 204 820 28 64
This is how they should and can look with the proper coding:

This is what has to come out of the car:

(It's behind the cover panel on the passenger side. There's four connectors to remove, then two plastic clips to pop off. Pretty straightforward, really, now that I've done it.)
This is who you contact and ship your SAM to: whipplem104. He did mine, and can get a local 2012 car to do the work on.

Was it plug and play or did you need some kind of wiring harness? The dealership here says there's some wiring required but no one else on this thread has mentioned that need. Just the need to reprogram the fog lights.

Okay, maybe the dealership is assuming they're aftermarket lights and not OEM ones that we got from Parts.com. I got those exact p/ns and they arrived today.

Going to see if a couple of local shops can do it first, before I send it up to WA. There's a body shop nearby who works on 15 Mercs/month so I imagine they should have access to the tools if they're repairing that many Mercs. Otherwise, there's a BMW/Merc shop that specializes in aftermarket installs, maintenance, etc. So if the first place can't do it, the second place should.

Also, are the tails fully smooth? The Older ones had curves in them that made them harder to tint, right?

Never made it before I had to drive down to SD. I'll be going to a place on Thursday after I get back so we'll see then. If they can't do it, I may just have to go with Whipple's route.

Anyone have a PN for the SAM that needs to be reprogrammed? Does it need to be married to the VIN like an ECU? If a new one isn't too cheap I might consider buying one for a spare to use or something and sell it afterwards to someone that wants to do the same so there's no downtime.

Well, looks like I struck out with the local shop AND the dealerships. There's some password authentication the Xentry SW requires to access the Developer mode and I would have to leave my car with a dealership for several days. I guess it's not one of those things you can just make a phone call for.
My "backup" car is getting a power steering leak fixed so when I get that back, I'll try to remove the SAM to send it off to get reprogrammed.
Does anyone have a write up or tutorial about removing it? It seems straightforward, but I want to be 100% sure I don't screw anything up.

A couple of you have PM'ed me about this and I'll take a few minutes over the weekend to put up a DIY for you all. It's pretty easy IF you know what you're doing. Which I now do, having unnecessarily pulled the back half of my car apart the first time, lol.
