Oil Change Frequency
All,
I'm three weeks into my ownership of my 2010 White C63 with just over 20K miles. The car is an absolute blast and far better than I expected. The only significant issue is the narrow seats that are just too tight in the hip area.
I called the original dealer in Florida and they gave me the rundown on service history from delivery til 19,600 miles. All service has been done including service A and B, rear end, and brake system flush. The individual I spoke to said I was good to go until 20K miles. This translates to oil changes every 10K miles.
I would like any opinions as to what you all feel is the best frequency to change out the Mobil1. I have the filters and will pick-up the 5W-40 ESP oil when ready to do a change. Car will be driven mostly short distances in the AZ heat and will be driven aggressively on a semi-regular basis.
Thanks,
Joe

MBZ recommends every 10K or annually which ever is sooner. I do mine every 5k just be safe. MBZ recommends 0-40w or 5-40w. Going to 5-40w gets you nothing at high temps since both the oils have the same high temp properties as 40w. If heat is your concern you might consider 5-50w. Castrol also makes a special oil for M cars that is 0-60. However neither of these are on the MBZ approved list:

I do every 10k or whenever the car says so. Don't plan on keeping it for the long run and it's CPO'd so all I have to do is follow MB's schedule to stay covered under warranty.

Change my oil when the car says it time.
But I change the filter every 2,500 miles.
The problem is not the oil viscosity braking down; it’s keeping the oil clean!

What actually occurs is that the oil becomes acidic due to the nature of an internal combustion engine. Every time that spark plug fires it generates SOX compounds that make the oil become acidic. Hence the oil would start to eat your bearings after awhile.
Changing the filter that frequent is really just silly, as the filter actually gets BETTER with use, aka a NEW filter allows MORE dirt to pass than a used one.
The new filter does allow more flow

Keep this in mind, if your doing frequent oil changes and are resetting your Flexible Service System aka oil service indicator. Understand that this will throw off your others services like service B,C,D etc. as to when their due. Every fluid or lubricate in the car has a shelf life, and you would essentually throw everything out of timing. You would be interpretting when those services are due, that's all I'm saying. The choice is yours.

It is NOT the viscosity that breaks down my friend that you want to be worried about.

I would say 5-7.5K would be safe in the Tucson heat... I know there is a hand full of you t-locs :p maybe we can have a little GTG in a few weeks. I'll be back in town weekend of June 27th.
Oh and I can tune anyone while I'm there

Just a thought but you may well find you will need to top up the oil every few thousand miles anyway. Depending on how you drive it you might need 3-4L in top ups every 12000 . 3-4L is about 1/2 of the oil capacity of the motor ie about half the oil is being "turned over" for every 12000 miles you drive. If this is happening then you probably dont need to change the oil any more frequently than every 12000 miles.

This will change the way I think and do oil changes!
I did Google it to try and find some more info on this. Unfortunately there is not a lot of info on filters.
Guess I will change the oil and filter as recomended by MB.

Hi Joe (valvestud),
I also live in Tucson. I have only done one single oil change and my car has almost 18000 miles(I did my first oil change at 10200 miles).
Everytime I told the service advisor about my oil change he told me "don't worry, you are fine with the synthetic.
Anyways, what color C63 did you get?, I just came from Cars and Coffee car show/meet at La encantada Mall and I wish you had your car there. PM me so that we can talk. I located 5 C63 AMG owners in Tucson so far, ironically I saw a black one this morning in Campbell Ave.
Take care!
Carlos

^^ Are you kidding me? that is very subjective and not a good rule o thumb at all. You can basically park your car or weeks at the time and hardly put miles or in contrast, you can drive so many miles in 6 months that you can exceed the recommended oil chnage interval (10000 miles).

I'd like to give everyone a heads up on some related points:
- My local MB dealer had overfilled my oil and I had them remove the excess. The car didn't give a warning light for this, and it was shaking of the car that caused me to check the oil level.
- I asked the tech what kind of oil they use, and he said it was the same synthetic they use for all MBs. He said he's pushed for them to use Mobil 1, at least for the AMGs, but management didn't go for it.
- I asked him what grade oil they use, and he didn't know.
In a previous message in another thread, I talked about deferring to the expertise of the dealer and their trained/certified techs, but I'm now having second thoughts about that.

Actually the "regular" 5W-40 is for diesel applications. The ESP formula conforming to MB spec 229.51, is the low ash formula and is now the specified oil for the 6.3

is also my daily driver(mostly city driving) 6 month intervals work for me.
