Brake Rotor Life?
Hi Everyone,
Does anyone have the stats for the minimum safe thickness for our brake rotors?
My dealership is telling me I need new rotors, but I believe them about as far as I can throw them (they told me I needed new rear tires when I have 5mm tread above wear bar).
Any help would be appreciated.

Yes sir, I can help a lot. This is what you need to know. You don't need to replace the tires with 5 mm above the thread wear just because the dealer tell you to do so. Just completely ignore them if you feel that you don't need to replace it.
As far is the rotors, the same thing. The dealers have a tendency to replace rotors when in reality you might be able to resurface them. This happenss a lot with flywheels too in other cars, why replacing a new flywheel when you can reuse the same flywheel after being resurface.
My personal opinion is to resurface the rotors if you can. I am planning on doing my own brakes when they wear out, I will remove the rotors my self and take them to one of the many machnie shops in Tucson and save myself $1000 plus in a brake job by putting also aftermarket brake pads.

The minimum thickness is stamped on the outside of the rotor (the side touching the ground if you were to rest them without the wheels/tires). Have them show you the min thickness that is stamped and the caliper reading when they measure it.

You need to have them measured with a micrometer to determine if their still above minimum thickness. This determines whether they need to be replaced or not. Rotors that are below their minimum thickness to heat up to fast during braking, thus increasing your stopping distance and will not cool efficiently.

For the Fronts the rotors new are 36mm, wear limit for service is 33.5mm, Wear limit is 33mm
Without P30,
Front rotors new are 36mm, wear limit for service is 34mm, and wear limit is 33.4mm
Rear new is 26mm, wear limit for service is 24.5mm, and wear limit is 24mm

Good info. I still will resurface them a little if I can and next time around probably think about the Evosports.
What could technically happen if you go ahead and resurface the disc? I am thinking that maybe the pedal feels would be a hair spongier.

Drilled rotors can be resurfaced, although Mercedes doesn't recommend it. Just find yourself a good machine shop, and ask them to take off 1/1000th of material. Or as little material as possible. But first have them measured to ensure their not at their mininum thickness, this way you can gauge how much life you have lefted in your rotors.

But if they do need to be replaced them, consider www.racingbrake.com they are a good replacement for the OEM.

Personally, I cannot justify $2600 for rotors. I'm searching high and low (mainly low
) for other rotor options. My rotors are neither warped nor cracked, so I may be able to just stick with them. We'll see.

Since your front brakes due 65-70% of the braking force, your front rotors will need replacing before the rears. Your tires are the opposite But Racing brakes at $600 a rotor, are currently the cheapest option available, so trust me on this. I have owned a E63 for the last 4 yours, and my OEM front rotors are $930 from Mercedes. So believe me when I tell you, this is the cheapest option. My C63 is only a year old, so I don't have to worry about those for quite some time. Evosport sells the front rotors for $1300 a set. And a entire replacement set for $2000 (front and rear), two piece rotors. Also try www.parts.com now you have more options then when you started.
