Geez,..OILS....everyone has an opinion, don't they.
Me?,.....I don't concern myself with this issue....I just run with what the book says (what the Dealer puts in?).....I think there's a Mobil 1 sticker on the car somewhere.....I've used that on many of our cars....never had an issue.
To be perfectly honest, I reckon oil produced by any major manufacturer, providing it was of the right viscosity etc, would be OK.

What do you guys think about the 10k mile oil change interval? I never go by this. I change it 7k miles max. With Mobil 1 5w-40.

For a good brand of synthetic, I don't see why 10k is unreasonable. You may have to top it off before then, but that's about it.

I let the dealer change at 10k+ miles and use a topsider for an in-between change at 5-6k miles. But then I'm still using the M1 ESP 5w-40 which is not a high TBN oil to begin with.

I used to change every 3k miles but now I will go up to 5k-6k miles. I'm sure thats being overly conservative but whatever.

My dealer uses 0w-40. They do not carry the 5w-40, and I would have to bring in my own. If you have prepaid mantience, should the dealership purchase the 5w-40 for you?

My dealer was not aware of oil change to 5w-40.

Thank you very much for your post. This occurs as the automotive fluid standards have changed in the meantime (in May 2008)

AMG recommends the use of the following oils:

- Mobil 1 5W-40 for M156 engine (63er models)
- Mobil 1 0W-40 all other AMG engines (as well the AMG diesel engines that was used for the C 30 AMG)
- Mobil 1 5W-50 SLR engine

Before that change, the Mobil 1 0W-40 was used for the 63 models as well.

Supposedly both mobile 1 0w-40 and 5w-40 is authorized for m156 engine and will not void warranty. But AMG recommends 5w-40.

I am hesitant on using 0w-40 or adding 0w-40, because from what I read 2012 has 5w-40 oil.. I Don't know if I am being too ****

Weistec has been preaching the gospel of 5W-40 for a long time also. But which M1? I may be the only one here still using the ESP version.

The only difference between 0w-40 and 5w-40 is the viscosity at start-up temperature.

ESP version is for diesel.

I can not find formula M 5w-40 anywhere.. Guess I will have to use 0w-40

And this is why we don't use 0w40. It's too thin at start up which allows it to bleed out of the hydraulic lifters. Which can cause loud valve train noise and premature wear.

It is. I'm comfortable with using it in this gasoline engine based on the VOA's and UOA's that have been published. Many dealers in SoCal started out using it in C63's and then switched to M1 0W-40 (as my two did). The main drawback is that it starts out with a relatively low TBN which may render it unsuitable for truly extended OCI's. Mine are 5-6k miles so that is not a consideration.

I am sorry but this is incorrect. The main reason that 90% of engine wear occurs at start up is that the oil is TOO THICK at start up temp to do its job. Even the "0w" weight oils are too thick at start up but since they are thinner at say 75* than a 5 or a 10w oil, as warming starts they start to do the job quicker.

From BISTOG "The greatest confusion is because of the way motor oils are labeled. It is an old system and is confusing to many people. I know the person is confused when they say that a 0W-30 oil is too thin for their engine because the old manual says to use 10W-30. This is wrong."

Was at my Dealership yesterday to discuss a few things at which time they topped up the oil in our '12 C63, with 0-40 Fuchs.

That is fine and probably what I will use as well...merely pointing out that the idea that Merc63 stated that the 0-40 oil is too thin on start up is not really a correct statement.

What causes the cam lobes to wear out prematurely on the M156? Is it due to factory specification for oil change intervals being too long, or simply owner neglect?

Or simply the engines are not warmed up properly and driven hard when cold?
