Any reason why rear tires so skinny?

I have been reading threads over and over and many seem to not like the skinny size of the rear. So I tried some search and found other competitive cars such as M3, S5, etc.. have wider tires..

Is there any specific reason MB put skinny tires on rear?

I don't know what the skinny tires mean for performance, but I just think wider ones look much better.

Thank you!

i think AMG owners on this board are over this issue, i don't think anyone knows exactly WHY...

Savings cost is the only thing that comes to mind.

255 35 19 - front
275 30 19 - rear

I use this no problemo. Still spins lots. Handles the same as when I had a 255 40 19 on the rear... Which actually barely spun at all because they were a wayyyy softer tire. (Hooiser R6)

If you are concerned about looks, the 275 looks decently wide from the rear of the car.

To be honest with you the OEM Pirelli Pzeros or Conti P5's are pretty wide for 255's.
The main reason for the rears being so skinny is the rear quarter panels wont accommodate A wide tire setup.

Dumb azz bean counters at MBZ. The cost for the factory to put wide rear fenders and wheels/tires would have been nominal compared to a retro fit. End result is we may have one of the best drift cars in the world (like it or not).

I think the C63 is the car that holds the longest drift record. There was a video on it!

Sorry. My English is bad.. do u mean 275 on rear won't fit? or do you mean it is wide enough (look-wise). I used to have S6 which had 265, I always wanted it to be wider thou..

I just told you 275 fits on the 19s....

And this car is drift king. I've went to few drift practices at the local track, she goes wild.

275's will fit on the OEM wheels. Ive ran 275's one the stock 18's with no problem.
The OEM 255 Pirelli Pzero or Conti's run wide so it actually looks (and is) wider other 255 tire brands.

For some reason, I always thought the MB fokes put 255's in the rear for Fuel Economy concerns. lolz They don't want to make it any worse than it already is.

because then they couldn't charge your a$$ 125k for a black series with a wider rear track and 285s.

LOLz +1 Don't forget about the crank case pressure reduction, because that's what's adding the horsepower and not the elimination of the detune.

I think you're correct. Auto manufacturers plan things years in advance. The C63 BS wasn't just conceived a year or two ago. Cars take years to engineer. And it is said that when a new model comes out, it's already 4-or-so years behind the manufacturers technology.

If the C63 started out with wider rear fender flares, wider rear wheels, tires and a suspension to match, there would be very little to differentiate the C63 BS from the base model C63, considering the available P31 option and some cooling mods would have made it pretty close to the new BS.

Obviously there is more to the BS than the elements I mentioned above but, when you start getting into the fenders, wheels, tires, and suspension, it does start getting too close for MB's comfort to their BS.
