My ROW Airboxes Arrived Today!
#26
I don't think the North American box tops are meant to be a restriction. They have to fit carbon filters on top of the regular air filters. The carbon filters seat behind a lattice. And when you stack that carbon filter in the box top, there probably isn't enough room for the cutout of the black, oval ROW air inlets.
I can see how opening up restriction at any point would be a good thing. It's an interesting question.
I would think opening up the front inlets and replaceing the boxes with RT boxes would be a great setup. But, then you still have the same size straight piping connecting the front to the back.[/QUOTE
Idk I just havnt seen a design in my opinion that would actually do something there are a few good ideas ie rt grouppe m, they all need to be put together and then still there are bottle necks

Ordered them directly from a German supplier.
Ended up being about $455 Canadian shipped UPS express.
I was going to order a Gruppe M or a Carbonio Intake... But I was worried about warranty... SO I went OEM =O) Saved a couple of bucks too!
North American with CF removed vs new ROW.
AFE Pro Dry S Filters
Start up sounds mean!!! Much more UMPH/growl from the exhaust.
Haven't driven it yet.... but I'll report back later.
EDIT: Prior to the ROW air box install I had the AFE filters and CF removed from the stock boxes. Those alone made the car start louder... But with the ROW boxes and the AFEs it's even louder still.

I purchased them from
http://shop.auto-bendig.de/catalog/
PNs are as follows:
LT side A1560940306
RT side A1560940406
Did some measurements... The funnel inside the NA box is 1.5" wide.... The ROW boxes are 2.75" wide.
The modified funnel inside the NA box to accommodate the carbon filter really restricts airflow.
IMHO I think Mercedes designed the air box perfectly for ROW applications. The NA version was a hack job/after thought to satisfy the NA market.
I'll let you guys know seat of pants feel tomorrow when I drive it.

Well after driving it all day from SOP feel I notice a difference in the mid range. Pulls a little harder then usual.
I'm happy just for the sound and $$$ savings over a Gruppe M and Carbonio intake.

So these eliminate the use of the charcoal filters--has anyone thrown codes for charcoal delete?? I thought I remember someone having issues and they reinstalled the charcoals and it went away. Am I on crack?
Also, does anyone know if AMG would have made any other adjustments (ecu?) to accommodate our ****ty air boxes and charcoal filters?
I'd love to know how much better it sounds.
Anyone have before and after vids?
Ugly orange DOT lens, ****ty air boxes and no LSD fin cooler--maybe the ROW C63s are worth the extra $

The front inlets before the boxes were designed for the ROW boxes.
Hence the restriction with the US boxes.
Plus there hasn't been any proven data that shows the restriction is in the front inlets.
Once you match the front with the air boxes they were designed to mate with you get back the factory designed flow. Getting more flow vs the stock North American setup.
The rest of the world gets the "Original" setup.... We get a restrictive modification to get our car to market..
Here`s another members dyno sheet....
With Stock boxes charcoal/carbon removed (RED) vs ROW boxes (BLUE)
For comparison the member`s car made 359HP with stock US air box and charcoal filters intact.
Hence the restriction with the US boxes.

Based on looks alone, the Renntech looks to be superior. Smooth transition from box top to runner into the manifold. There is another member here that actually has some data showing it works at the track.
It's the torque that matters.

O is that how it works, well I guess you have it all figured out how to get this car to win races..

The factory funnels are used with this.
They say that this thing really does make a difference.
For cost vs performance/sound, I'd say the ROW boxes are your best bet. You can get about 6 sets for the price of the Renntech hahaha.

Renntech obviously doesn't think the funnels are a restriction...

Do you have to disconnecting your battery when you swap out the ROW air box? My ROW air box come with new map sensors and do not want to pop that stupid "check engine light". On my 07 GTI, every time i disconnected the map sensor, the CEL on and i have to clear the code. Please let me know, thank you.
