The End Is Near
Carb (the California Air Resources Board) has just announced regulations for automakers to reduce greenhouse gasses by 47% and smog causing emissions by 75% but 2025. Considering the exhaust of many cars today is cleaner than the air going into the engine this seems a bit draconian. The goal is to have at least 25% of all vehicles sold in Cali to be electric by that day (The current number is one third of a percent with hybrid selling about 1%). Of course they don't count the pollution emitted by the electricity generation plants to charge these cars. The last time measures of this magnitude took effect was in 1973 and it took the auto industry 15-20 years to recover. If not for the massive advances in computer technology, we would still be driving "high performance" vehicles barely making 178hp (my first 911). I don't think a high tech magic pill will be forthcoming this time around. We are living in the last golden age of high performance cars. I owned a 1970 440 six pack. hemi crash box tranny, Dana 60 rear end, convertible Challenger R/T that I paid $6k for used (78 produced world wide). I sold for $20K and thought I was a genius. The same car went at auction several years ago for close to $750,000.The C63 is a sceaming bargain in retrospect adjusted for inflation. While production number are much greater, attrition and age will take its toll. If you have a Black Edition don't even considering parting with it. Remember the 1964-1966 Mustang was produced in sizable numbers and look at the prices for a clean one now (don't even thing about a Shelby GT350). Gentlemen, let's enjoy and revel in the automotive world we currently live in as its days are numbered.

In short words: I hate a lot of things about California and I am afraid that I am not the only one.....
That is one of the last places that I would actually ever think about moving to. Ironically I go to San Diego for cavation several times a year(for vacation).
California laws are ridiculous just like the lawmakers

To answer all the above.
1. We did say the same things in the 70's but were saved by the advent of modern microchips. I don't see this happening again.
2. They've stopped making Tesla's
3. California (if you like it or not) is the number state in consumption of autos and has historically set the bar in emission standards not only in the US but world wide.
I really hope I am wrong about my post, but all the evidence points otherwise.

I was born and raised in Southern California and it is one of the worst states for laws and regulations regarding emissions, car modifications including tint, as well as gas prices and gas octane availability. Too many damn tree huggers with thier hippie mentality that everyone needs to drive a prius or honda fit in order to fit in and be respected...

Automotive performance will never go away. It will adapt to the regulations. You can still make cars that go fast with electric motors on each wheel or mini jet engines like that crazy Jaguar (2020).
But, I like the gas engine.

I saw a turbo diesel Dodge dually the other day with a sicker on the bumper that said "F*ck your Prius". Had my laughing all the way home.

What is CA trying to do here, prevent Global Warming? It has been proven to be the greatest hoax ever perpetrated on mankind but the evidence is being surpressed and virutally ignored by the mainstream.

I think it's more than that. CA has always been in the forefront of emission regulation as it's market for car makers is too large to ignore. Hence they've been able to shove regulations down car makers throats and other states/countries immediately jump on the band wagon (it a good way to get elected). So it's an ego thing. However there is also a insidious anti car Jihad/ pro public transit movement (called transit first which equates to public transit only) in this state that is actually pissed off their first attempts in the 1970 to wreck havoc on the auto industry resulting in the unintended consequence of ending up with vehicles with low emission, higher mileage, with some astronomic performance numbers.

The OP is on to something... look at the next gen AMG motor... 5.5 biturbo.
better performance, better fuel economy. But it doesn't sound as good and has less throttle response. I don't like it because as an enthusiast it's taking my favourite cars in a direction I don't want to go.
C63 drivers are a unique breed and, sadly, the future is not bright for us. Most of us could be in 911 turbos or GTRs if we wanted. soon we won't have a choice. The next 10 years I'm sure will see turbocharged motors everywhere ultimately culminating in every AMG being as fast as a veyron. But they won't have that NA attitude. I saw the writing on the wall and decided to buy a 6.2L NA motor while I still could.

Thanks to all of you for your observations and comments to my rant. I hope the optimists are correct that we will find a way (maybe the flux capacitor is not just a movie myth). I brought it up more to provoke thoughts on how government interjects itself, sometimes for the betterment and sometimes not, but in the end the people will prevail.
