C63 Tire Monster!!

I changed my tires friday to my winters an had a quite a shock! After 7500kms on my C63 the rears were bald in the centres! I guess this is to be expected with the torque and such, in addition I do drive the car hard. How long have you guys had your rears last for!?

You have to reduce the rear toe-in to minimum for the winter to reduce this quick tire wear when you don't demand extreme performance from the car.

I wonder if the cost of getting the dealer to do an alignment each season (summer and winter) would offset the cost of any additional tire wear? I had thought about backing off camber and toe-in for winter and then maxing it out again for the summer track season too but then started to think about the benefit versus the cost.

Why would you use the dealer?

Any good alignment place will do a rear alignment in 15 minutes for about $60.

I would question the cost and time as well compared to the value received. The toe-in is the only adjustment that can be made on the rear as far as I know.

I called a good local shop in (Saint John, NB) for an estimate and they referred me to the dealer....LOL and sort of doubt they could do it in 15 minutes but $60 is probably a fare estimate.

I lowered my car last winter on H&R springs and ended up taking it to the dealer. He did the alignment for $135 tax in. They told me the camber was not adjustable and recommended camber bolts for the front (rear is not adjustable). So I said OK. The car still pulled to the right after the alignment. Took it back for the bolts to be installed and realigned and they charged me $434 tax in. I was not ready for that but did not bother to get an estimate so my bad. They fixed the car pulling to the right by rotating the front wheels left to right and it cured the pull. Some sort of radial pull in the tires?

Anyone really know how much longer the rear tires will last by adjusting the rear toe-in? I think most of the wear is from torque and the go pedal unless you do a lot of highway miles.

Torque is at play but the tires are scrubbing with the aggressive toe-in. Each car is delivered slightly differently within the alignment specs so one car will wear differently than another. Setting to the least aggressive toe-in within the spec will help.

I discussed this issue with some of the folks at the AMG experience event.

In Halifax, Scotia Tire has a great alignment machine in Dartmouth. They charge me $60 for Corvette alignments and do a great job at it saving tire wear while keeping the car fun on the track.

Here is someone who tried it:

Get the exact alignment specs and bring them with you. Adjust them to the minimum rear toe-in from the spec.
See what they are before they adjust to close to .28

OK; found them :

FRONT (PER SIDE):
Camber: -1 to -1.8
Toe: .08 to .25

REAR (PER SIDE):
Camber: -.9 to -.1.9
Toe: .28 to .52

It's funny, when I picked up my car, the parts guy asked if I wanted to pre-order some rear tires and I don't think he was kidding.

We should do a group buy on tires and maintain our own inventory

I even think the supplier can keep our inventory and ship on demand if we commit to a large volume of tires within a given period of time.

All we need to do is ask once we have a volume and brand defined for us in Canada.
