INTERMITTENT CEL

Need thoughts. CEL comes on regularly, lasts for week or so, car seems to run fine, then after fueling up light goes out after a day or so. Burn down to about half tank and CEL comes back on. Car has Kleeman Stage II tune with short tube headers, K&N filters, no charcoals. My thought was a bad gas cap seal.

Thanks.

If your car is under warranty take it to the dealer and have them check the intake manifold gaskets. That seems to be a common problem that triggers the CEL. If no warranty, the parts are pretty cheap – do-it-yourself

Don't know but it does sound like the vent system on the tank. Bad cap seal, purge valve, vent canister or lines. Not sure why it does not come on till the tank is half empty and goes out when you fill it. Can you get the code read at an auto parts store? The dealer is your best bet for a diagnosis if it is still under warranty and they are not too far away.

Went to three different auto parts stores, each attempted to read the codes but unable to link. Third guy said before trying he didn't think it would link with an AMG. Guess I'll make the drive to the dealer (70 miles). Thoughts?

I use the Cen-Tech model #99722 OBD2 Scanner.

Works perfectly.

Snap on make a small cheap hand held scanner that can pull codes easily. That's what I use.

Thanks for the scanner info. When you get the malfunction codes, how do you interpret them? Are they available on-line?

The CenTech displays the code and a brief description of the problem.

Scanner arrived, 8 codes, all associated with left / right bank lean. Cleared the codes, came back on in about 15 miles.

2 questions:
1. Could this be due to K&Ns with no charcoals?
2. Does the car run the same with CEL on? Doesn't seem to be in limp mode.

Thanks.

Wow! all cylinders were lean? That's not good, how long have you had that Kleeman tune.

1. Possibly. Did your CEL pop up after installing the K&N's? Some other members have had the same issue after removing the charcoals and installing
aftermarket filters.

2. It should if you drive normally but the ECU may dump timing if it senses a lean condition.

Try putting the charcoals and stock filters back in, erase the codes and drive around to see if a CEL pops up again.

Anything W/4Wheels
Change u plugs or u 02 sensors 99.9% sure that's what u problem is
Bring your car to a shop that uses snap on computer
Some of the newer snap on computer can tell if your 02 sensor are good or bad.
