Damn Rats...
I got the check engine light this afternoon so I took it in for service, then they found out that my engine wiring plus some other stuff got chewed by rats, and now I am looking at lease $2100+ of damages. This freaking sucks as I was planning on a road trip next week.

or at least a garage cat on a leash?
but seriously, that sucks and im sorry you have to go through that. Are you sure your insurance, home or car, wouldnt cover that sort of damage? you should look into that.
Surely there must be some rat traps or something you coud place around or near the car for the future.

Ouch, sorry to hear that! Was it stored in your garage or outside, you might be able to get insurance to cover it? I dont know tbh but it might be worth a try, if you havent already.

I don't know what to tell you but I never have rats in my car because I always garage my car. I have seen this happen though so you are definately not the first one.
I once was at the chevrolet dealer and they brought a new C6 Z06 in a towing truck. The service manager told me that the wiring harness was eaten by rats.

The more important question for me is, why to rats/mice love wiring harnesses so much? What is so tasty about them?

Shake Away
Ever since some rodents chewed up the underhood liner in my M5 to make a nest in the engine compartment I've used Shake Away. This stuff is the real deal. If your car is parked in a garage, use a flat dish (I just use a paper plate) of it, positioned so that you drive over it and when parked the plate is located under the engine compartment. If parked outside, tuck a piece of cloth filled with Shake Away and tied off, in each side of the engine compartment. I put some in an open paper bag also. IMO it the only thing that works. I'd also put some strategically located glue boards down on the garage floor...they work much better than traps.

I'll bet that rat was a BMW fanboy
Sorry about your car, this is one of my nightmares.
Had a family friend who had chipmunks eat the interior of his restored 54 Vette

Dam Sheep,
Sorry to hear about your troubles. So a lesson for all of us, if your going to store your vehicle for a long time, place rat poison under your car, and inside the engine compartment.
Before I retired from the Marines, I stored various cars without any issues. The only issue, I had with my bimmer was a dead battery and ants, of all things.

Just to clarify, if you are referring to Shake Away it is not a poison, it's just the scent of predators that eat those pesky rodents that like to eat underhood harnesses. SA itself is essentially odorless (to humans).
