Sorry, I work in the industry.. except I like to follow standards, and really get worked up when companies pull crap like this and use their large userbase as well as their huge financial sway to change standards to serve their own purposes.. it only serves to confuse people.
Somehow, the 4 major US carriers managed to get the ITU to change the minimum requirements fort eh 4G standard, we did not see the rest of the world try to pull that.. drives me nuts...

Regardless of what the service provider's network supports, the iPhone 4S does NOT support 4G wireless. Check their webpage. The just-released iPad 3 does support 4G, so we can expect the iPhone 5 to, but the 4S simply does not. Period.
My ISP may support 250Mb/s internet, but if I'm connecting using wireless G, I'm still only getting 54Mb.
