The purpose of an X pipe is to scavenge exhaust flow from the two exhaust banks.
When a pulse comes through the left bank and crosses over its creates a vacuum that helps pull the pulse of the opposite bank through and increases exhaust velocity.. It also can have a noise canceling effect as well and will smooth out the exhaust note. Usually an X pipe will add a slight bit of power because of this scavenging effect.
